Caring for Townsend patients at our Port Dover office

Every dental service for Townsend

Clean teeth, confident kids

Regular cleanings help kids build healthy habits early.

Even with careful brushing at home, plaque and tartar can build up in hard-to-reach areas of children’s mouths. A professional cleaning removes this build-up, polishes the teeth and gives the hygienist a chance to show kids and parents where brushing could improve. Regular visits also help children become comfortable in the dental chair.

Townsend families can book children’s cleanings at our Port Dover office, often combined with an exam. The hygienist will explain each step in child-friendly language, go at a pace that suits your child and share practical tips for brushing and snacks that fit your family’s routine.

Preparing your child

A little preparation helps kids feel at ease.

  • Talk about it positively

Explain that the hygienist will count their teeth and clean them so they stay strong and shiny. Keep the language simple and upbeat, and avoid words that hint at discomfort, even in reassurance. Picture books or short videos about dental visits help younger children know what to expect, and practising opening wide in front of a mirror can make it feel like a game.

  • Choose a good time

Book a time when your child is usually rested and not hungry, which for many younger children means the morning. Let the team know about any worries, sensory sensitivities or difficult past experiences when you call. A favourite toy or comfort item may help, and arriving with a few minutes to spare avoids a rushed, stressful start to the appointment.

During the cleaning

The hygienist explains each step as they go.

  1. Gentle removal of plaque and tartar

The hygienist uses small instruments to gently remove plaque and any tartar from the teeth, paying attention to the gumline and the spaces between teeth. Many hygienists show each tool first and give it a friendly name, explaining what it does before using it. Children are told they can raise a hand at any point if they need a short break.

  2. Polishing and fluoride

Next, the teeth are polished with a slightly gritty paste, often in a choice of flavours that children enjoy picking. Fluoride may be applied to strengthen the enamel, depending on your child’s risk of cavities. The hygienist may floss between the teeth and point out any spots that need a little extra attention when brushing at home.

Learning together

Each cleaning is a chance to learn.

Brushing technique and tools

The hygienist can show you and your child how to angle the brush toward the gumline, reach the back molars and floss between teeth that touch. They may suggest a toothbrush size, an electric brush or flossers that suit your child’s age and hands. Most children need a parent’s help with brushing until around the age they can tie their own shoelaces.

Snacks and drinks

How often children snack matters a great deal for cavities. The hygienist may suggest offering water between meals, saving sweets and juice for mealtimes and choosing snacks like cheese or vegetables that are kinder to teeth. Small, consistent changes in daily routine often make a bigger difference over time than strict rules that are hard to keep.

Between visits

Consistency keeps teeth healthy between cleanings.

Daily routines that work

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste in an amount suited to your child’s age, and help with flossing where teeth touch. Building brushing into the morning and bedtime routine, at the same point every day, helps it become automatic. A two-minute song or timer can keep children brushing long enough, and praise for effort encourages them to keep at it.

When to call sooner

Contact the office if you notice tooth pain, a dark or chalky spot, swelling, gums that keep bleeding or a chipped tooth after a fall. Do not wait for the next scheduled cleaning if something seems wrong, since problems in young teeth can move quickly. Early attention usually means simpler, more comfortable treatment for your child.

Questions about kids’ cleanings

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often should my child have a cleaning?

Many children are seen at regular intervals, but the right timing depends on their risk of cavities and the health of their gums. The dentist and hygienist will recommend a schedule suited to your child and explain the reasons behind it.

Does a teeth cleaning hurt?

Most children find cleanings comfortable. The hygienist uses gentle techniques and explains each step before doing it. If your child feels any discomfort, they can raise a hand and the hygienist will pause and adjust their approach.

What age should my child start having cleanings?

Cleanings often begin once enough teeth have come in and your child is comfortable sitting in the chair. The dentist will suggest when to start based on your child’s development, temperament and any early signs of plaque build-up.

Is fluoride applied at every cleaning?

Not necessarily. Fluoride is recommended based on your child’s cavity risk and the other fluoride sources they already have, such as toothpaste. The hygienist will explain whether it would help and how it is applied before going ahead.

Can I stay with my child during the cleaning?

Parents are often welcome, especially with younger children. Let the team know what helps your child feel comfortable. Staying calm and encouraging in the room, rather than anxious, helps your child relax and see the visit as routine.
