Clean teeth, confident kids

Regular cleanings help children keep healthy teeth and good habits.

Even children who brush well can miss areas along the gumline and between teeth. Over time, plaque can harden into tartar that only a dental professional can remove. A children’s cleaning gently removes this buildup, polishes the teeth and gives the hygienist a chance to coach your child, and you, on brushing and flossing techniques suited to their age.

Langton families can book children’s cleanings at our Port Dover office, often together with an exam. The team keeps the visit friendly and paced to your child’s comfort, explaining each step in simple words. Siblings can sometimes be scheduled close together to make the trip into town easier for the whole family.

Why cleanings matter

Cleanings protect against cavities and gum inflammation.

Removing plaque and tartar

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth every day. If it is not removed, it can cause cavities and inflamed, bleeding gums. Children with braces, crowded teeth or limited brushing skills are especially prone to buildup. Professional cleaning removes what brushing misses and leaves teeth smooth, which makes plaque harder to stick to.

Spotting problems early

During a cleaning, the hygienist can spot early signs of decay, white spots on enamel, gum inflammation or areas your child consistently misses. These observations are shared with the dentist and with you. Catching problems early often means simpler treatment, and seeing which areas need more attention helps families improve their routine at home before the next visit.

What happens

The visit is designed to be comfortable and positive.

  1. Gentle cleaning and polishing

The hygienist uses small instruments to remove plaque and tartar, then polishes the teeth with a gritty paste, often in a child-friendly flavour. Floss is used between the teeth. The hygienist explains what they are doing in simple terms, such as tickling or counting teeth, and lets your child see tools before they are used.

  2. Fluoride and education

Fluoride varnish may be applied to strengthen enamel, depending on your child’s risk of cavities. The hygienist may show your child how to brush and floss, using a mirror or model. Parents are often given tips too, such as how much toothpaste to use and how to help younger children brush thoroughly each night before bed.

Preparing your child

A little preparation goes a long way.

  • Before the appointment

Talk about the visit positively and simply: the hygienist will count and clean your teeth and make them shiny. Avoid words that suggest pain. Choose a time when your child is usually well rested and fed. Bringing a favourite toy or comfort item can help, and it helps to arrive with a few minutes to spare.

  • Supporting nervous children

If your child is anxious, let the team know when booking. They can take extra time, explain each step and allow breaks. Some children feel more comfortable sitting on a parent’s lap or watching a sibling go first. Praise your child for trying, whatever happens, to build positive associations with dental care that last into adulthood.

Between cleanings

Daily care keeps teeth healthy between visits.

Brushing and flossing

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste: a grain-of-rice smear for children under three and a pea-sized amount for older children. Help or supervise brushing until your child has the dexterity to do it well, often around age seven or eight. Floss once teeth touch, using floss picks if they are easier for small hands.

Snacks and drinks

Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially between meals, and offer water instead of juice. Avoid putting children to bed with milk or juice. Healthy snacks such as cheese, vegetables and fruit are gentler on teeth. Regular cleanings, usually every six months or as recommended, help keep your child’s mouth healthy over the long term and into the teen years.

Children’s cleaning questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often should my child have a cleaning?

Many children benefit from cleanings about every six months, but the right interval depends on their cavity risk, gum health and habits. The dentist and hygienist will recommend a schedule suited to your child after reviewing their mouth.

Does a teeth cleaning hurt children?

Cleanings are usually comfortable. Some children feel tickling, pressure or mild sensitivity, especially if there is tartar or inflamed gums. The hygienist works gently and explains each step. Let them know if your child feels uncomfortable.

Is fluoride varnish necessary?

Fluoride varnish can help strengthen enamel and protect against cavities, particularly for children at higher risk. The dentist will recommend whether it is helpful for your child and how often it should be applied at visits.

Can I stay with my child during the cleaning?

Parents are usually welcome to stay, especially with younger children. Some older children prefer to go in on their own. Talk with the team about what works best for your child and be flexible if needed.

What if my child will not cooperate?

This is common, especially with young children. The team will try gentle approaches and may complete what they can. A short, positive visit builds trust for next time. Let the team know if your child has particular fears or sensitivities.
