Seeing Jarvis patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Jarvis patientsClean teeth, confident kids
Even children who brush every day miss spots. A professional cleaning removes plaque and tartar, polishes away surface stains and gives the hygienist a chance to coach your child on brushing and flossing. Regular cleanings help prevent cavities and gum inflammation while teaching children that dental visits are routine.
When the kids need cleanings, Jarvis families can often book them alongside exams at our Port Dover office. Siblings can sometimes be scheduled together to make one trip cover everyone.

Getting ready
Explain that the hygienist will count and tickle their teeth to make them shiny and clean. Keep it simple and positive. If your child has had a difficult experience before, let the team know so they can take extra care and go at your child’s pace.
Book at a time of day when your child is usually rested and fed. For young children, mornings often work well. Bring a comfort item if it helps. Arriving a little early gives your child time to settle in without feeling rushed.
What happens
The hygienist uses small instruments to gently remove plaque and tartar, then polishes the teeth with a gritty paste that may come in kid-friendly flavours. Flossing may follow. Each tool is introduced before it is used, and your child can raise a hand to ask for a break.
Fluoride varnish may be applied to strengthen enamel. The hygienist checks for early signs of decay, gum inflammation and areas where plaque collects. The dentist usually examines the teeth during the same visit. You will hear about anything that needs attention.
Coaching
The hygienist may show your child how to angle the brush toward the gums, brush all surfaces and reach the back teeth. Older children may learn to floss. Using a mirror or a disclosing tablet that colours plaque can make learning fun and show where brushing needs improvement.
Parents may receive tips on how much toothpaste to use, when to help with brushing and how to make the routine easier. Ask for advice on electric toothbrushes, flossing tools or managing children who resist brushing. Practical strategies help make home care consistent.
Between visits
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss where teeth touch. Help young children brush until they have the dexterity to do it well, often around age seven or eight. Make brushing a regular part of morning and bedtime routines to build consistency.
Limit sugary snacks and drinks between meals and offer water. Sticky foods and frequent snacking increase cavity risk. Keep regular cleanings and checkups, and call the office if your child complains of pain, sensitivity or bleeding gums between visits.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book a cleaning for your child. Let us know if siblings need appointments too, and share any concerns about comfort.
Bring your child’s health information and previous dental records if you have them, along with any questions.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Many children benefit from regular cleanings through the year, but the interval depends on their risk of cavities and gum health. The dentist will recommend a schedule.
Most children find cleanings comfortable. The hygienist is gentle and explains each step. If your child is sensitive, let the team know so they can adjust.
Fluoride varnish is often offered during children’s cleanings. Ask the team whether it is recommended for your child and how often.
That is common with young children. The team will work at your child’s pace and may keep the visit short. Positive experiences help build cooperation over time.
Once teeth touch each other, flossing helps clean between them. Parents usually need to help young children. The hygienist can demonstrate techniques.
Routine exams track how a child’s teeth, bite and jaws develop. Jarvis families can book children’s checkups at our Port Dover office and ask questions along the way.
When a child needs dental treatment, clear explanations help parents decide and kids cope. See how our Port Dover team talks through treatment with Jarvis families.
