Clean teeth, confident kids

Professional cleanings reach where little toothbrushes miss.

Even children who brush every day can build up plaque and tartar in hard-to-reach places, especially along the gumline and between back teeth. A professional cleaning removes these deposits, polishes the teeth and gives the hygienist a chance to coach your child on brushing. Regular cleanings also help children grow comfortable with dental visits in a low-pressure setting.

Hillcrest families can book cleanings for their children at our Port Dover office. The hygiene team adjusts each visit to the child’s age and temperament, explaining each step in friendly terms and offering practical tips for parents to use at home between visits, whatever your child’s age.

Getting ready

A positive introduction makes the cleaning easier.

  • Talking about the cleaning

Describe the cleaning in simple, upbeat terms, such as the hygienist counting and tickling teeth to make them shiny. Picture books or videos about dental visits can help young children know what to expect. Avoid words that might sound frightening, and try not to pass on any of your own dental nerves. Keep the explanation short and matter-of-fact.

  • Choosing a good time

Book the appointment for a time when your child is usually rested and fed, avoiding nap time where possible. Bring a comfort item if it helps. Let the team know about any sensory sensitivities, medical conditions or worries your child has mentioned, so the hygienist can plan the pace and approach before your child sits in the chair.

During the cleaning

Each step is explained before it happens.

  1. Removing plaque and tartar

The hygienist uses small instruments to gently remove plaque and tartar from tooth surfaces and along the gumline. The team often introduces each tool by name, shows it to the child and explains what it will feel like. Children may feel scraping or tickling sensations. If your child becomes uncomfortable, the hygienist can pause or adjust the approach to keep them at ease.

  2. Polishing and fluoride

Teeth are polished with a gritty paste, often in a choice of flavours, and the hygienist may floss between teeth. Fluoride varnish may be applied to strengthen enamel, depending on your child’s needs. Your child may be asked to avoid eating hard foods for a short time afterwards so the fluoride has a chance to work properly.

Coaching

Cleanings are also a chance to learn.

Brushing technique for kids

The hygienist may show your child how to brush along the gumline, reach back teeth and clean the tongue. Some offices use disclosing tablets that colour plaque, making it easier for children to see missed areas. Praise and encouragement help children feel proud of their efforts, which can make brushing at home more enjoyable and consistent.

Guidance for parents

Parents often receive advice on the right amount of fluoride toothpaste, when to start flossing, how to help with brushing and healthy snacking habits. Many children need help with brushing until they can tie their shoelaces or write neatly, which is later than many parents expect. Ask the hygienist about any challenges you face with your child’s routine.

Between visits

Home care keeps cleanings easy and quick.

Daily routine

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, help with flossing where teeth touch and encourage water between meals. Limit sticky and sugary snacks, especially between meals. Making brushing part of a predictable routine, such as after breakfast and before bed, helps it become a habit. A timer or favourite song can help children brush long enough.

When to call

Call the office if your child has a toothache, swollen gums, a spot that seems to be growing, a chipped tooth or difficulty chewing. Bleeding gums that persist despite good brushing should also be checked. The team can advise whether an earlier visit is needed rather than waiting until the next scheduled cleaning comes around.

Planning your appointment

Booking cleanings for Hillcrest kids.

Call our Port Dover office to schedule your child’s cleaning and checkup together. If you have more than one child, ask whether appointments can be arranged back to back so the whole family can be seen in a single trip.

Mention your child’s age and any concerns when booking so the team can allow the right amount of time for the appointment.

Kids’ cleaning questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often should my child have a cleaning?

Many children have cleanings at regular intervals, but the right frequency depends on their risk of decay, gum health and how well they brush. The dentist and hygienist will recommend a schedule based on your child’s individual needs.

Will the cleaning hurt my child?

Cleanings are usually comfortable for children. Some may feel tickling or scraping, and sensitive gums might feel tender briefly. The hygienist explains each step and can pause if your child feels uncomfortable or needs a moment to rest.

Is fluoride varnish necessary every time?

Not always. The dentist recommends fluoride based on your child’s risk of decay. Children with a history of cavities or other risk factors may benefit from more frequent application. Ask the team why it is or is not being recommended.

Can I stay with my child during the cleaning?

Parents are often welcome to stay, especially with younger children. Some older children prefer a little independence. Ask the team about their approach and discuss what you think will work best for your child’s comfort and confidence.

My child will not open their mouth. What happens?

The team will try gentle techniques and may do as much as your child allows. Building comfort over several visits is often more effective than forcing a full cleaning. Let the team know about your child’s past experiences.
