Protection for every level of play

A good sports guard is comfortable enough to wear every time.

Sports guards cushion the teeth and soft tissues against impacts from falls, collisions, sticks, pucks and balls. They can help reduce the risk of chipped, broken or knocked-out teeth and cuts to the lips and cheeks. The best guard is the one you actually wear, which is why fit, comfort and ease of breathing and speaking all matter a great deal.

Whether you play in an adult hockey league, coach a weekend team or ride and rope on the farm near Vanessa, our Port Dover office can help with a custom sports guard. The dentist will consider your sport, your teeth and any dental work, and recommend a design that suits how and where you play.

Who needs one

Guards help in more activities than many people realize.

Contact and collision sports

Hockey, football, lacrosse, rugby, boxing and martial arts carry clear risk of mouth injury, and many leagues require guards. Basketball, soccer, baseball and volleyball also cause dental injuries from elbows, heads and balls. Adults playing recreational sports are not immune, and dental work such as crowns and implants can be expensive to replace if damaged.

Other activities with risk

Mountain biking, skateboarding, skiing, snowboarding and horseback riding can all involve falls onto the face. People with braces, bridges, implants or protruding front teeth may face higher risk. Talk with the dentist about your activities, even those you do only occasionally, to decide whether a guard makes sense for them and what style would suit.

Guard types

Fit affects both protection and comfort.

Stock and boil-and-bite guards

Stock guards come ready to wear and are inexpensive, but they often fit loosely and can make breathing and talking difficult. Boil-and-bite guards are softened in hot water and shaped by biting, which improves fit somewhat. Both offer some protection, but players may remove them if they feel bulky or slip during play, which leaves teeth exposed.

Custom-fitted guards

Custom guards are made from impressions or scans of your teeth, so they fit snugly and evenly. They can be designed with appropriate thickness for your sport and are often more comfortable to wear for a full game. The dentist can also accommodate braces or dental work in the design, which is harder to do with off-the-shelf options.

Getting fitted

A custom guard usually takes two short visits.

  1. Impressions and design

At the first visit, the dentist checks your teeth and bite and takes impressions or a scan. Let them know your sport, position and any past mouth injuries, since these may affect the design. You can often choose colours or add a name, which helps keep track of your guard in a busy locker room or equipment bag.

  2. Fitting and adjustments

At the fitting, the dentist checks that the guard seats properly, does not press on your gums and allows you to breathe, speak and drink comfortably. Small adjustments can be made. Practise wearing it during training before an important game so it feels natural. If it rubs, feels loose or affects breathing, call for a check.

Care and replacement

A clean, intact guard protects you best.

  • Cleaning and storage

Rinse your guard after each use and brush it gently with cool water and mild soap. Let it dry fully before storing it in a ventilated case. Avoid leaving it in a hot car or in direct sunlight, which can warp it. Do not share guards, and keep it away from pets that might chew it while it sits in your gear.

  • When to replace

Replace your guard if it becomes torn, thin, loose or no longer fits after dental work. Teens and young adults whose teeth are still shifting may need new guards more often. Bring your guard to dental checkups so the dentist can assess its condition and fit, and recommend replacement before it stops offering real protection.

Sports guard questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Do adults need sports guards?

Yes, if they play sports with contact, collisions or fall risk. Adults with crowns, bridges or implants may especially benefit, since damage to dental work can be costly and complex to repair. Recreational leagues carry real risk too.

Can I wear a sports guard with braces?

Yes. A guard is important with braces because brackets can cut the lips and cheeks during impact. The dentist can recommend a design that accommodates braces and may need adjusting or remaking as teeth move through treatment.

How often should I replace my sports guard?

It depends on wear, growth and changes in your teeth. Many players replace guards every season or so. Replace yours sooner if it is torn, loose or uncomfortable, or after new dental work changes how it fits.

Is a custom guard worth it?

Many people find custom guards more comfortable and easier to wear for a whole game, which improves protection in practice. The dentist can explain how a custom guard compares to store-bought options for your sport.

What should I do if I injure a tooth while playing?

For a knocked-out adult tooth, hold it by the crown, rinse briefly if dirty and try to replant it or store it in milk. Call the dental office right away. Seek emergency care for head injuries or breathing difficulty.
