Sports guards cushion the teeth, lips and gums from impact during physical activity. They can help reduce the risk of chipped, broken or knocked-out teeth and soft tissue cuts. Many leagues require them for contact sports, but they are also worth considering for activities with a risk of falls or stray elbows, from cycling to recreational basketball.
Adults and teens at Peacock Point who play sports can arrange a custom sports guard fitting at our Port Dover office. Mention your sport and any dental work, such as crowns or braces, so the guard can be designed to protect them.

Why wear one
Hockey, football, lacrosse, rugby, boxing and martial arts carry obvious risks. Basketball, soccer, baseball, mountain biking and skateboarding can also lead to face injuries. Even recreational games can result in accidents. Wearing a guard consistently, in practice as well as games, offers the best protection.
If you have crowns, veneers, bridges or implants, a blow to the mouth can damage them. Braces can cut the lips during impact. A guard designed with these in mind provides extra protection. Ask the dentist whether your dental work needs special consideration in the design.
Types
Custom guards are made from impressions or scans of your teeth, providing a close fit that stays in place. They can be designed with thickness suited to your sport. Many athletes find them easier to breathe and speak with than generic guards, which encourages consistent wear.
Stock guards come ready to wear, and boil-and-bite guards are softened and shaped at home. They are widely available and better than no guard. However, they may fit loosely, feel bulky or provide less coverage. Bring your current guard to the dentist if you want its fit checked.
Fitting
The dentist examines your teeth and takes impressions or a digital scan. Your bite may also be recorded. If you have dental work that needs repair, it may be addressed first. The guard is then made to fit your teeth and the demands of your sport.
At the fitting appointment, the dentist checks that the guard stays in place, covers the right teeth and allows comfortable breathing and speaking. Adjustments are made as needed. You will learn how to clean and store it properly to keep it in good condition.
Care
Rinse the guard before and after each use and clean it with a soft brush and cool water. Store it in a ventilated case. Avoid leaving it in a hot car or direct sun, which can warp it. Do not chew on it or share it with others.
Inspect your guard regularly for tears, holes or a loose fit. Bring it to dental checkups so the dentist can assess its condition. Replace it if it is damaged or no longer fits, especially after dental work or orthodontic changes. A worn guard offers less protection.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book a sports guard fitting. Mention your sport, when your season starts and any dental work or braces that may affect the design.
Bring your current guard if you have one, and check your league’s equipment requirements before the appointment.

Yes. Guards can be designed to accommodate braces and protect the lips from cuts. Ask the dentist and orthodontist which option suits you during orthodontic treatment.
Replace it when it shows wear, tears or a loose fit, or after significant dental changes. Bring it to checkups so the dentist can check its condition and recommend replacement if needed.
A well-fitted custom guard is designed to allow comfortable breathing and speaking. Bulky or poorly fitting guards may feel restrictive. The dentist can adjust a custom guard for comfort.
Contact the office promptly. Even with a guard, injuries can happen. If a tooth is knocked out, handle it by the crown and seek care immediately. For head injuries, seek medical care first.
