Dental injuries are common in contact and collision sports, but they can happen in almost any activity involving speed, balls, sticks or the risk of falling. A sports guard cushions blows to the mouth, helps protect teeth from chipping or being knocked out and reduces cuts to the lips and cheeks. Fit and comfort strongly affect whether a guard is worn consistently.
Athletes from Langton, whether they play in organized leagues, recreational teams or simply stay active, can be fitted for a custom guard at our Port Dover office. The dentist will consider your sport, bite, any braces or dental work and how often you play when recommending a design.

Who needs one
Hockey, football, lacrosse, rugby, boxing, martial arts and wrestling carry a high risk of mouth injuries, and many leagues require guards. Basketball, soccer, baseball and volleyball also involve collisions and flying objects that can damage teeth. Adult recreational players are just as vulnerable as younger athletes, especially in fast-paced pickup games at a rink or ball diamond.
Cycling, mountain biking, skateboarding, skiing, snowboarding and horseback riding can involve falls that injure the mouth. If you have crowns, bridges, veneers or implants, a guard may help protect that investment. The dentist can recommend whether a guard makes sense for your activities, level of contact and the time you spend playing in a typical week.
Guard options
Stock guards come ready-made and are inexpensive, but they are often bulky and loose, making breathing and speaking harder. Boil-and-bite guards are softened in hot water and moulded at home. They fit better than stock guards but can be uneven, thin in places or distorted if not moulded carefully, which reduces protection when it matters.
Custom guards are made from impressions or scans of your teeth. They fit closely, stay in place, allow easier breathing and talking and can be made in thicknesses suited to your sport. Many athletes find them more comfortable, so they are more likely to wear them for every practice and game throughout the whole season.
Fitting process
The dentist takes an impression or digital scan of your upper teeth and sometimes your lower teeth and bite. If you have braces, missing teeth or new dental work, mention it so the guard can be designed accordingly. Let the team know your sport and position, as some activities benefit from thicker or differently shaped guards for more protection.
When the guard is ready, the dentist checks the fit, bite and comfort. You should be able to close comfortably, breathe and speak reasonably well. Practise wearing it during training before game day so it feels natural. If it rubs, feels loose or causes soreness, contact the office so it can be adjusted for you.
Care and replacement
Rinse the guard before and after each use and clean it with a soft brush and cool water or mild soap. Store it in a ventilated case to dry and keep it away from heat, such as a car dashboard or sunny windowsill, which can warp it. Never share guards, and keep them away from pets that might chew them.
Inspect the guard regularly for tears, holes, thinning or a loose fit. Bring it to dental checkups so the dentist can assess its condition. Growing teens, people with new dental work and those who have had orthodontic changes may need a new guard more often. Replace any guard that no longer fits securely or snugly.
Planning your appointment
Book a sports guard fitting at our Port Dover office. Mention your sport, how often you play, any braces or recent dental work and when your season starts so the guard is ready in time.
Bring your current guard if you have one, so the dentist can check its fit and see where it may be wearing.

Yes. Adults playing recreational hockey, basketball, soccer or other sports face the same risk of dental injuries as younger players. A guard helps protect natural teeth and dental work such as crowns, veneers and implants.
Yes, and it is especially important because brackets can cut the lips and cheeks during impact. Special guards are designed to fit over braces. Talk to the dentist or orthodontist about the best option while teeth are moving.
Replace a guard when it shows wear, tears or no longer fits securely. Growing teens may need a new guard every season or so. Adults may keep a custom guard longer if it remains in good condition and fits well.
Many athletes find custom guards more comfortable and easier to breathe and talk with, so they wear them more consistently. Better fit also means more reliable protection. The dentist can help you weigh the options.
Call the office promptly. For a knocked-out adult tooth, handle it by the crown, keep it moist in milk and seek care immediately. Head injuries, heavy bleeding or breathing problems need emergency medical attention first.
Hockey, soccer or games in the yard, a well-fitted guard protects young teeth. Langton parents can ask about guards suited to a growing mouth in Port Dover.
Falls, farm work and sports can injure teeth, gums and jaws. Langton patients can learn first steps after a dental injury and why follow-up visits matter.
