Port Dover Family Dentistry
When a baby tooth is lost too early, a space maintainer can hold room for the adult tooth. Vanessa parents can learn when one helps and how to care for it.

Baby teeth do more than help children chew. They also hold space in the jaw for the adult teeth developing underneath. If a baby tooth is lost early because of decay, injury or extraction, neighbouring teeth can drift into the gap. That can block or misdirect the adult tooth when it comes in, which may lead to crowding and more complex orthodontic needs later on.
If your child from Vanessa has lost a baby tooth early, the dentist at our Port Dover office can check whether a space maintainer would help. Not every early loss needs one, so the dentist looks at the tooth involved, your child’s age and how soon the adult tooth is expected before making a recommendation.

When it helps
Space maintainers are most often recommended when a baby molar is lost well before the adult tooth beneath it is ready to erupt. Back teeth tend to shift forward quickly into an open space, which can reduce the room available for the adult tooth. The dentist will use X-rays to see where the adult tooth is and how far along its development is.
If the adult tooth is close to coming in, if the lost tooth is a front tooth in some situations, or if there is already plenty of space, a maintainer may not be necessary. The dentist will explain whether waiting and watching is reasonable or whether a maintainer would likely prevent bigger problems with crowding and alignment later.
Types
Fixed space maintainers are cemented to one or more teeth and use a small wire loop or bar to keep the gap open. Common designs include a band and loop on one side or a wire connecting teeth across the arch. They stay in place until the dentist removes them, which means children cannot lose them or forget to wear them.
Removable space maintainers look somewhat like a retainer and may include artificial teeth to fill the gap. They can be taken out for cleaning and may suit older children who can be relied upon to wear them. The dentist will recommend the design that fits your child’s age, the missing tooth and their ability to care for it.
Fitting
At the first visit, the dentist examines the area, may take X-rays and takes an impression or scan of your child’s teeth. For some fixed designs, small spacers may be placed between teeth for a few days to make room for bands. The maintainer is then made to fit your child’s mouth precisely, often in a dental lab.
At the fitting appointment, the dentist checks the maintainer and cements it in place or shows you how to insert and remove a removable one. Your child may feel some pressure or notice it with their tongue for a few days. Most children get used to it quickly, and it should not hurt once settled.
Care
Help your child brush carefully around the maintainer, especially where bands or wires meet the teeth, since plaque can collect there. Avoid sticky candies, chewing gum and very hard foods that could bend or loosen it. Discourage pushing or pulling on the wire with fingers or the tongue. Clean removable maintainers daily as instructed and store them safely.
Regular checkups allow the dentist to make sure the maintainer still fits and is doing its job. Call the office if it becomes loose, bent, broken or uncomfortable. Once the adult tooth begins to come in, the dentist will remove the maintainer, usually in a quick, simple visit without any need for freezing at all.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office if your child has lost a baby tooth early or needs one removed. The dentist will assess whether a space maintainer would help and explain the process and timing.
Mention how and when the tooth was lost, and whether your child has had any dental injuries or orthodontic assessments before.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. It depends on which tooth was lost, your child’s age and how soon the adult tooth is expected. The dentist uses an exam and X-rays to decide whether a maintainer is likely to help or whether monitoring is enough.
Fitting a space maintainer is usually painless. Some children feel pressure or tightness for a few days, and spacers for bands can feel snug at first. Most children adapt quickly and stop noticing the appliance.
Usually until the adult tooth begins to come in, which may be months or a few years depending on age and development. The dentist checks progress at regular visits and removes the maintainer when it is no longer needed.
Call the office promptly. A loose or broken maintainer may not hold the space and could irritate the gums. Keep any loose pieces and avoid letting your child play with or chew on the appliance.
Most foods are fine, but avoid sticky candies, gum and very hard foods that could loosen or bend it. Cutting food into smaller pieces can help, and good brushing around the appliance is important every day.
An early look at a child’s bite can flag crowding, crossbites or habits worth watching. Vanessa parents can learn what an assessment covers and what may follow.
