Baby teeth act as natural placeholders for adult teeth. When one is lost too early, because of decay, injury or extraction, neighbouring teeth can drift into the empty space. That can leave too little room for the adult tooth, causing crowding or eruption problems. A space maintainer is a small appliance that holds the gap open.
If your child has lost a baby tooth early, Turkey Point families can have the space assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain whether a maintainer is needed and how long it may stay in place.

When it is needed
Losing a baby molar well before the adult tooth is due is a common reason for a space maintainer. Back teeth are more likely to drift forward and close the gap. The dentist considers your child’s age, which tooth was lost and how far along the adult tooth is in its development.
If the adult tooth is close to coming through, or if the space is unlikely to close, a maintainer may not be necessary. Some front baby teeth lost early do not lead to space problems. X-rays help the dentist see the developing adult tooth and decide whether monitoring alone is enough.
Types
Fixed maintainers are cemented to a neighbouring tooth and usually consist of a metal band with a wire loop that rests against the tooth on the other side of the gap. They stay in place until the adult tooth begins to erupt. Children cannot remove them, which avoids lost appliances.
Removable maintainers look similar to a retainer and may include artificial teeth to fill gaps. They can be taken out for cleaning. They work well for older children who can be relied on to wear them consistently. The dentist will recommend the most practical option for your child’s situation.
Getting one
The dentist takes impressions or a scan of your child’s teeth and sends them to a laboratory to make a custom maintainer. At the next visit, the maintainer is checked for fit and either cemented in place or fitted as a removable appliance. Numbing is usually not needed.
It may take a few days for your child to get used to the feeling. They may notice it with their tongue or find certain foods slightly awkward at first. The team will explain what to expect and how to keep the appliance clean. Call the office if your child complains of soreness.
Care and follow-up
Brush carefully around the maintainer, especially at the band, where plaque can build up. Avoid sticky candies, chewing gum and very hard foods that could loosen or bend it. Discourage your child from pushing or pulling at the wire with their tongue or fingers.
Regular checkups allow the dentist to confirm the maintainer is secure and the adult tooth is developing as expected. When the adult tooth starts to erupt, the maintainer is removed. Contact the office if it becomes loose, breaks or falls out, especially before leaving Turkey Point for the season.

Baby teeth hold space for adult teeth. If the gap closes, the adult tooth may not have enough room, leading to crowding or eruption issues.
Usually not. Fitting is generally quick and does not require numbing. Some children feel mild pressure or need a few days to adjust.
Until the adult tooth begins to come in. This can range from months to a few years, depending on development.
Keep it if it falls out and contact the office. A loose or broken maintainer should be checked promptly.
Mostly, yes. Avoid sticky or very hard foods that could damage it. The team will give specific guidance.
