Every dental service for Silver HillHolding room for adult teeth
Baby teeth act as natural placeholders for the adult teeth developing beneath them. If a baby molar is lost early because of decay or injury, neighbouring teeth can drift into the gap, leaving less room for the permanent tooth. A space maintainer is a small appliance that keeps the space open until the adult tooth is ready to come through.
Silver Hill families whose child has lost a baby tooth early can have the gap assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will check the child’s age, which tooth was lost and how the adult tooth is developing, then explain whether a space maintainer is recommended or monitoring is enough.

When it helps
Space maintainers are most often recommended when a baby molar is lost well before the adult tooth is due to come in. Back teeth are especially important because they hold space for premolars and help guide the position of the first permanent molars. If the gap is likely to close before the adult tooth arrives, a maintainer can help prevent crowding.
If the adult tooth is close to coming through, or if the lost tooth is a front baby tooth, a space maintainer may not be necessary. X-rays help the dentist see how far along the adult tooth is. The dentist will explain the reasoning and whether watching the gap at regular checkups is a reasonable alternative.
Types of maintainers
Fixed maintainers are cemented to teeth next to the gap, often with a small band around one tooth and a wire across the space. Because they stay in place, they do not rely on the child remembering to wear them. They are common for back teeth and are checked at regular visits to make sure they remain secure.
Removable maintainers resemble a retainer and can include artificial teeth to fill visible gaps. They require the child to wear them consistently and to handle them carefully. The dentist will consider your child’s age, cooperation and which tooth was lost when recommending the type that is most suitable.
Fitting
At the first visit, the dentist takes impressions or scans of the area, and sometimes fits a band around the supporting tooth. The maintainer is made to fit your child’s mouth. The team explains each step in friendly language so your child knows what to expect and can ask questions.
At the next visit, the maintainer is placed and checked for fit and comfort. Fixed maintainers are cemented in place, while removable ones are adjusted and your child is shown how to put them in and take them out. Your child may notice it with their tongue at first, but most adjust quickly.
Caring for it
Brush around the maintainer and supporting teeth carefully, since food can collect around bands and wires. Avoid sticky or hard foods, such as caramels, gum and hard candy, which can loosen or bend a fixed maintainer. Remind your child not to push on the wire with their tongue or fingers.
Contact the office if the maintainer becomes loose, bent, broken or causes soreness. Keep regular checkups so the dentist can monitor the adult tooth’s progress. Once the adult tooth begins to come through, the maintainer is removed, usually in a simple visit. Keeping up with checkups helps the dentist time that step well.
Planning your appointment
If your child has lost a baby molar early, contact our Port Dover office to have the gap assessed. Mention how the tooth was lost and when, so the dentist can plan the appointment.
Bring any previous dental records or X-rays. Let the team know if your child is nervous so they can take extra time to explain each step.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
If a baby tooth is lost early, neighbouring teeth can shift into the space before the adult tooth is ready. This can leave too little room, leading to crowding or blocked teeth. A maintainer helps preserve the space until the adult tooth arrives.
Placing a maintainer is usually not painful. Your child may feel pressure when a band is fitted and notice the appliance with their tongue at first. Most children adjust within a few days. Report any soreness that does not settle.
It stays in place until the adult tooth begins to come through, which can range from months to a few years depending on your child’s development. The dentist monitors progress at regular visits and removes it when appropriate.
Contact the office. Keep the maintainer if it has come out completely. The dentist can recement or replace it. Avoid letting your child play with a loose maintainer, which could bend or damage it further.
Mostly, yes. Avoid sticky, chewy or very hard foods that could loosen or damage the appliance. Encourage your child to chew carefully and brush thoroughly around it after meals. Call if anything feels loose.
Crowding, crossbites and habits can be spotted while a child grows. Silver Hill parents can learn what an early assessment checks and what may follow.
