Port Dover Family Dentistry
When a baby tooth is lost too early, a space maintainer can hold room for the adult tooth. Renton parents can learn how these are fitted and cared for.

Caring for Renton patients at our Port Dover office

Baby teeth hold space for the adult teeth developing underneath. When a baby molar is lost early because of decay, injury or extraction, neighbouring teeth can drift into the gap. That can leave too little room for the permanent tooth, potentially leading to crowding or a tooth coming in out of position. A space maintainer is a small appliance designed to prevent that drift.
Families in Renton whose child has lost a baby tooth early can have the situation assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will check whether a maintainer is needed, explain the type suited to your child and describe how long it might stay in and how to look after it at home.

When it is needed
A maintainer is often suggested when a baby molar is lost or removed well before the adult tooth is due to erupt. The dentist considers your child’s age, which tooth was lost, how far the adult tooth has developed and whether neighbouring teeth have started to shift. X-rays help show the position and readiness of the developing permanent tooth.
If the adult tooth is close to coming in, or if a front baby tooth was lost, a maintainer may not be needed. In some cases, the dentist may suggest monitoring the space instead. The dentist will explain the reasoning so you understand whether an appliance offers a real benefit for your child right now.
Types of maintainers
Fixed maintainers are cemented to neighbouring teeth, often using a band around a tooth with a wire that extends across the gap. They stay in place until removed by the dentist. Because children cannot take them out, they do not get lost, but they do require careful cleaning around the bands and wires daily. Parents can help.
Removable maintainers resemble small retainers and can be taken out for cleaning. They may include artificial teeth to fill visible gaps. They rely on the child wearing them consistently, which can be challenging for younger children. The dentist will recommend the type that suits your child’s age, the gap and their likely cooperation with wear.
Getting fitted
The dentist takes impressions or a scan of your child’s teeth. For a fixed maintainer, bands may be tried on to find the right size. The appliance is then made to fit. These steps are usually quick and comfortable, though some children dislike the feeling of impression material for the brief time it is in.
At the fitting visit, a fixed maintainer is cemented in place, or a removable one is adjusted for comfort. The dentist checks the bite and shows you and your child how to care for it. Your child may need a few days to adjust to the feeling of the appliance when eating and speaking normally.
Care and follow-up
Help your child brush carefully around the maintainer and clean between teeth. Avoid sticky, chewy or very hard foods such as toffee, gum and ice, which can loosen or bend the appliance. Discourage pushing or playing with it using the tongue or fingers. For removable types, clean the appliance daily and keep it in its case.
Regular checkups allow the dentist to check that the maintainer is secure and still needed. It is usually removed once the adult tooth begins to erupt. Call the office if the maintainer comes loose, breaks or causes discomfort. For Renton families, combining these checks with routine visits can reduce extra trips to Port Dover. Ask when booking.

Not always. It depends on which tooth was lost, your child’s age and how close the adult tooth is to erupting. The dentist will examine your child and take X-rays to decide whether a maintainer is beneficial.
The process is usually comfortable. Impressions and fitting do not typically require numbing. Your child may feel some pressure or notice the appliance for a few days, but most children adjust quickly and forget it is there.
It stays in until the adult tooth begins to come in, which may be months or several years depending on age and development. The dentist monitors progress at checkups and removes it when appropriate to do so.
Call the office. Keep the appliance if it comes out completely. A loose maintainer can sometimes be recemented. Avoid letting your child play with it, as this can damage the appliance or irritate the gums.
Most foods are fine, but avoid sticky, chewy and very hard items that can loosen or bend the appliance. Cut foods into smaller pieces if needed, and encourage your child to chew carefully and slowly.
Some bite and spacing issues are easier to guide while a child is still growing. Renton parents can learn what an early bite assessment looks for.
Regular checkups track how a child’s teeth and jaws are developing. See what a children’s dental exam covers for Renton families visiting our Port Dover office.
