Caring for Port Ryerse patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Port RyerseSaving room for adult teeth
Baby teeth hold space for the permanent teeth growing beneath them. When a baby tooth is lost too early because of decay or injury, neighbouring teeth can drift into the gap, leaving less room for the adult tooth. A space maintainer is a small appliance that keeps the space open until the permanent tooth is ready to come in.
Families from Port Ryerse whose child has lost a baby tooth early can have the gap assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will check X-rays, consider timing and explain whether a space maintainer is advisable or whether the gap can simply be monitored.

When it is needed
Space maintainers are most often considered when a baby molar is lost or removed well before the permanent tooth is due. Back teeth are more likely to shift, which can lead to crowding or blocked permanent teeth. The dentist considers the child’s age, which tooth was lost and how far along the adult tooth is.
If the permanent tooth is close to erupting, or if a front baby tooth is lost, an appliance may not be necessary. Some gaps remain stable on their own. The dentist will explain the reasoning and may recommend checking the space at future visits instead of placing an appliance.
Types of maintainers
Fixed space maintainers are cemented to one or more teeth. A common type is a band and loop, which attaches to a tooth next to the gap with a wire extending across the space. Fixed designs stay in place, so the child does not need to remember to wear them.
Removable maintainers resemble small retainers and can sometimes include a replacement tooth for appearance. They require the child to wear them consistently and care for them properly. They may suit older children who can manage them responsibly. The dentist will recommend the best option.
Getting fitted
The dentist takes X-rays to check the developing permanent tooth and an impression or scan of the area. The appliance is often made in a dental lab. Let the team know if your child gags easily or is anxious so they can adapt the process accordingly.
At the fitting visit, the appliance is tried in, adjusted and cemented or inserted. No freezing is usually needed. Your child may notice the appliance with their tongue for a few days. The dentist will explain care instructions and what foods to avoid.
Care and removal
Brush around the appliance carefully, as food can collect near bands and wires. Avoid sticky candy, gum and hard foods that can loosen or bend it. Discourage your child from pushing on it with their tongue or fingers. Report if it becomes loose, bent or uncomfortable.
The dentist checks the appliance at regular visits and monitors the permanent tooth on X-rays. Once the adult tooth begins to erupt, the maintainer is removed. Removal is quick and usually painless. If the appliance comes off early, contact the office for advice.
Planning your appointment
If your child has lost a baby tooth early, call our Port Dover office to arrange an assessment. Mention how and when the tooth was lost.
If a maintainer becomes loose or breaks, keep the pieces and call the office rather than trying to reattach it.

Not always. It depends on which tooth was lost, your child’s age and how close the permanent tooth is to erupting. The dentist will explain whether one is advisable.
Fitting is usually quick and painless, without freezing. Your child may feel some pressure or notice the appliance with their tongue at first.
Until the permanent tooth starts to come in, which may be months or years depending on development. The dentist monitors progress at regular visits.
Contact the office. Keep the appliance if it comes out. A loose maintainer may need recementing or replacement to keep the space properly.
Mostly, yes. Avoid sticky, chewy or very hard foods that could damage or dislodge the appliance. The dentist will provide specific guidance.
An early look at a child’s bite can flag issues while the jaw is still growing. Port Ryerse families can arrange an orthodontic assessment in Port Dover.
Regular checkups follow a child’s teeth as they grow. Port Ryerse families can learn what a children’s exam covers and how to prepare for a visit in Port Dover.
