Baby teeth act as placeholders for adult teeth. When one is lost too early because of decay or injury, neighbouring teeth can drift into the gap, leaving too little room for the permanent tooth. A space maintainer is a small appliance that keeps the gap open until the adult tooth is ready to erupt, helping reduce crowding later.
Families from Peacock Point can have their child assessed for a space maintainer at our Port Dover office. The dentist will check the space, the developing adult tooth and your child’s overall growth before recommending an appliance.

When needed
A space maintainer is often recommended when a back baby tooth is lost early and the adult tooth is not expected to erupt for some time. Molars play a key role in holding space. The dentist may take X-rays to see the developing tooth and estimate how long until it arrives.
If the adult tooth is close to erupting, or if the lost tooth is a front baby tooth where space loss is less common, a maintainer may not be needed. The dentist will explain the reasoning and whether monitoring is a reasonable alternative for your child.
Types
Fixed maintainers are cemented to a neighbouring tooth, often with a band and a wire loop that extends across the gap. They stay in place until removed by the dentist. Because they cannot be lost or forgotten, they are commonly used for younger children.
Removable maintainers are similar to retainers and can be taken out for cleaning. They may include artificial teeth to fill visible gaps. They rely on the child wearing them consistently, so they are usually recommended for older children who can manage them responsibly.
Fitting
The dentist takes impressions or a scan of your child’s teeth. For fixed maintainers, a band may be fitted around a neighbouring tooth. The appliance is then made to fit the space precisely. Your child does not usually need numbing for these steps.
At the placement visit, the dentist cements or fits the appliance and checks that it sits comfortably without pressing on the gums. Your child may feel some pressure or notice it with their tongue for a few days. You will receive instructions on care and what to avoid eating.
Care
Brush carefully around the appliance and the teeth it attaches to. Avoid sticky foods, chewing gum and hard candies that can loosen or bend it. Discourage your child from pushing it with their tongue or fingers. For removable types, clean the appliance daily and store it safely.
Regular checkups allow the dentist to check the appliance and monitor the adult tooth. Once the permanent tooth begins to erupt, the maintainer is removed. Contact the office if the appliance becomes loose, broken or uncomfortable, or if your child reports pain.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office if your child has lost a baby tooth early. The dentist can assess whether a space maintainer is needed and explain the options.
Bring your child’s dental records, especially if the tooth was removed or lost at another office, and note when it happened.

When a baby tooth is lost early, nearby teeth can shift into the gap and block the adult tooth. A space maintainer holds the space open until the permanent tooth is ready to come in.
No. Fitting usually involves impressions and placing the appliance, without numbing. Your child may feel some pressure or awareness of it for a few days, which typically settles.
It stays in place until the adult tooth begins to erupt, which may be months or years depending on development. The dentist monitors progress at regular visits.
Contact the office promptly. Keep the appliance if it comes out. Avoid letting your child play with it. The dentist can recement or replace it as needed.
Most foods are fine, but avoid sticky candies, gum and very hard foods that could loosen or bend the appliance. The dentist will provide specific guidance.
