Baby teeth hold space in the jaw for the adult teeth that will replace them. When a baby tooth is lost early, from decay or injury, neighbouring teeth can drift into the gap. This may leave too little room for the adult tooth, leading to crowding or eruption problems. A space maintainer is a small appliance that helps prevent this drift.
If your child in Normandale has lost a baby tooth earlier than expected, our Port Dover dentist can assess whether a space maintainer is needed. We will explain the options and how the appliance is cared for until it is no longer required.

When needed
If a baby molar is lost or removed well before the adult tooth is due, a space maintainer may be recommended. Front baby teeth lost early are less likely to cause spacing problems, though each case is assessed individually. The dentist looks at which tooth was lost and how soon its replacement is expected.
X-rays show how developed the adult tooth is and how long it may take to erupt. The dentist also considers your child’s age, bite and existing spacing. If the adult tooth is close to coming in, a maintainer may not be necessary. You will hear the reasoning for any recommendation.
Types
Fixed maintainers are cemented to a neighbouring tooth and use a wire loop to hold the space. Common types include band-and-loop and crown-and-loop designs. They stay in place without needing your child to remember to wear them, which can be helpful for younger children.
Removable maintainers resemble small retainers and may include artificial teeth to fill gaps. They can be taken out for cleaning but must be worn consistently to work. The dentist will recommend the type based on your child’s age, the location of the gap and their ability to care for the appliance.
Fitting
The dentist takes impressions or scans of the area, and sometimes fits a band on a neighbouring tooth. The appliance is then made to fit your child’s mouth. The process is usually comfortable and does not require numbing. The team explains each step so your child knows what to expect.
At the fitting visit, the dentist checks that the maintainer fits well and does not interfere with the bite. A fixed maintainer is cemented in place. Your child may notice it with their tongue at first, but most adjust quickly. You will be shown how to keep the area clean.
Care and removal
Brush around the maintainer carefully, since food can collect near the bands or wires. Avoid sticky candies, gum and very hard foods that could loosen or bend it. Encourage your child not to push on it with their tongue or fingers. Contact the office if it feels loose, bent or uncomfortable.
The dentist checks the maintainer at regular visits and monitors the adult tooth’s progress with x-rays as needed. Once the adult tooth begins to erupt, the maintainer is removed. This is usually quick and comfortable. Regular checkups continue to monitor development.
Planning your appointment
If your child has lost a baby tooth early, call our Port Dover office to arrange an assessment. Mention how and when the tooth was lost so the team can plan the visit.
If the tooth was removed by another dentist, bring any x-rays or records from that appointment.

Contact the office. Keep the appliance if it comes out completely and bring it to the visit. Avoid letting your child play with a loose appliance.
