Baby teeth act as placeholders for the adult teeth developing beneath them. When a baby tooth is lost too early because of decay or injury, neighbouring teeth may drift into the gap, leaving less room for the adult tooth. A space maintainer is a small appliance that holds the gap open until the permanent tooth is ready to come in.
If your child in Nanticoke has lost a baby tooth early, the dentist at our Port Dover office can assess whether a space maintainer is needed, explain the options and describe how the appliance is fitted and monitored.

When needed
Space maintainers are most often considered when a baby molar is lost early, since back teeth are more likely to drift and close the gap. The dentist considers which tooth was lost, the child’s age, how soon the adult tooth is expected and whether there is already crowding. X-rays help show where the adult tooth is in its development.
If the adult tooth is close to coming in, or a front baby tooth was lost, a maintainer may not be necessary. In some cases, monitoring is enough. The dentist will explain why a maintainer is or is not recommended and what might happen to the space if nothing is done.
Types
Fixed space maintainers are cemented to a tooth next to the gap and use a wire loop to hold space. Common designs include band-and-loop and lingual arch appliances. They stay in place until the dentist removes them, which means children cannot lose or forget them. The dentist will explain which design suits the gap.
Removable maintainers resemble a retainer and may include a replacement tooth for appearance. They require the child to wear them consistently and care for them. They may be considered for older children who can manage them responsibly. Ask about the pros and cons of each type for your child.
Fitting
At the first visit, the dentist may fit a band to a nearby tooth and take an impression or scan. The appliance is then made to fit. This is generally quick and does not usually require numbing. Let the team know if your child is anxious, so they can explain each step and go at a comfortable pace.
At the second visit, the maintainer is checked for fit and cemented or placed. Your child may feel some pressure or notice the appliance with their tongue at first. Most children adapt within a few days. The dentist will explain how to clean around it and what foods to avoid.
Care and removal
Help your child brush carefully around the maintainer and clean between teeth. Avoid sticky candies, gum and hard foods that can loosen or bend the appliance. Discourage pushing or pulling on it with fingers or tongue. Call the office if the maintainer becomes loose, bent or uncomfortable.
The dentist checks the maintainer and the developing adult tooth at regular visits. X-rays may be taken to monitor progress. When the adult tooth starts to come in, the maintainer is removed. Keep all follow-up appointments, since timing removal correctly is important for the adult tooth’s eruption.
Planning your appointment
If your child has lost a baby tooth early, call our Port Dover office to arrange an assessment. The dentist can explain whether a maintainer is needed and how it would be fitted.
Mention when and how the tooth was lost, and bring any X-rays taken at another office if available.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
When a baby tooth is lost early, nearby teeth can drift into the gap and block the adult tooth. A space maintainer holds the space open. The dentist will explain whether one is needed based on the tooth lost and your child’s development.
Most children feel some pressure or notice the appliance at first, but they usually adapt within a few days. If discomfort persists or the appliance rubs, contact the office so the dentist can check it.
It depends on when the adult tooth is expected to come in. Some children wear a maintainer for months, others longer. The dentist will monitor development with checkups and X-rays and remove it at the right time.
Call the office as soon as possible. Keep the appliance if it comes out and bring it to the appointment. A loose maintainer may not hold space effectively and needs to be checked or recemented.
Most foods are fine, but avoid sticky candies, gum and very hard foods that can loosen or damage the appliance. The dentist will give specific advice based on the type of maintainer fitted.
