Caring for Lynedoch patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Lynedoch patientsSaving room for adult teeth
Baby teeth hold space for the permanent teeth developing underneath. If a baby tooth is lost early because of decay, injury or extraction, nearby teeth can drift into the gap. This may leave too little room for the adult tooth, leading to crowding or teeth coming in out of position. A space maintainer is a small appliance designed to keep the gap open until the permanent tooth arrives.
Lynedoch families whose child has lost a baby tooth early can ask the dentist at our Port Dover office whether a space maintainer is advisable. The decision depends on which tooth was lost, the child’s age and how soon the permanent tooth is expected.

When it is needed
Losing a back baby molar early is more likely to allow shifting than losing a front tooth. The dentist will consider which tooth is missing, whether neighbouring teeth have already started to move and how the bite is developing. X-rays help show the permanent tooth’s position.
If the permanent tooth is close to erupting, a space maintainer may not be necessary. If it is still far from coming in, holding the space may help. The dentist will explain the reasoning and discuss whether monitoring or an appliance is the better choice.
Types
Fixed space maintainers are cemented to a neighbouring tooth and use a wire loop to hold the space. They stay in place without needing to be removed and are commonly used for back teeth. Some designs connect across the arch to hold space on both sides.
Removable appliances may be used in certain situations, especially if the child is older or more than one tooth is missing. They require the child to wear them consistently. The dentist will explain the advantages and responsibilities of each type for your child.
Getting fitted
Impressions or a scan of the teeth are taken so the appliance can be made. A small band may be fitted around the anchor tooth. The process is usually painless, and freezing is rarely needed. Explain to your child in simple terms what will happen to reduce worry.
At the next visit, the space maintainer is checked for fit and cemented in place. Your child may need a few days to get used to the feel. The dentist will explain how to care for it and what foods to avoid to prevent it from loosening or bending.
Care and removal
Brush around the appliance carefully, as plaque can build up near bands and wires. Avoid sticky candies, gum and hard foods that could bend or loosen it. Discourage your child from pushing on it with their tongue or fingers. Call the office if it becomes loose or broken.
The dentist checks the appliance at regular visits and monitors the developing permanent tooth. Once the adult tooth begins to erupt, the space maintainer is removed. Keep up with checkups so the appliance can be taken out at the right time.

Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
It depends on which tooth was lost, your child’s age and when the permanent tooth is expected. The dentist will assess these factors and explain whether an appliance is recommended.
The process is usually painless. Some children feel mild pressure or need a few days to adjust. Freezing is rarely needed. Explain the visit simply to reduce worry.
Until the permanent tooth begins to come in. This varies by child and tooth. The dentist monitors development and removes the appliance at the right time.
Call the office. Keep the appliance if it comes out completely. A loose space maintainer should be checked and recemented or replaced to keep holding the space.
Most foods are fine, but avoid sticky candies, gum and very hard foods that could damage the appliance. Brush carefully around it to keep the area clean.
Crowding, crossbites or early tooth loss can affect how a child’s bite develops. Lynedoch families can have growth reviewed at our Port Dover office and ask about timing.
Regular children’s dental exams track growth, catch decay early and build confidence. Lynedoch families can book checkups for kids at our Port Dover office.
