Baby teeth hold space for the adult teeth developing beneath them. When a baby molar is lost early because of decay, injury or extraction, neighbouring teeth can drift into the gap. That shift can leave too little room for the adult tooth, leading to crowding or blocked eruption. A space maintainer is a small appliance that keeps the gap open until the permanent tooth is ready.
Long Point families whose child has lost a baby tooth early can ask our Port Dover team whether a space maintainer is advisable. Timing matters, so it is best to raise the question soon after the tooth is lost.

Is one needed?
Early loss of baby molars is more likely to cause space problems than loss of front teeth. The dentist considers which tooth was lost, your child’s age, how soon the adult tooth is expected and how the bite looks. X-rays help show the developing adult tooth and its expected timing.
If the adult tooth is close to erupting or there is already plenty of space, monitoring may be enough. The dentist will explain the reasoning. If orthodontic treatment is anticipated, a maintainer may still help preserve options for later.
Types
Fixed maintainers are cemented to one or more teeth, with a wire or loop extending across the gap. Common types include band-and-loop designs for a single missing molar and lingual arch designs for multiple teeth. Fixed designs cannot be lost and require no daily removal.
Removable maintainers resemble a retainer and may include artificial teeth for appearance. They require cooperation and daily wear. The dentist will recommend a design based on your child’s age, which teeth are missing and how reliably they can wear an appliance.
Getting one fitted
The dentist takes impressions or scans of the teeth and sends them to a laboratory, or sometimes fits a ready-made band. If a band is needed, a small spacer may be placed between teeth beforehand. Your child may feel slight pressure but usually no pain.
At the fitting visit, the maintainer is checked for comfort and cemented in place if fixed. The dentist explains how to care for it. Your child may notice it with their tongue for a few days, but most children adapt quickly.
Living with it
Brush around the maintainer carefully, since food can collect near bands and wires. Avoid sticky candies, gum and hard foods that can bend or loosen the appliance. Discourage pushing or pulling on it with fingers or tongue. Report any looseness, breakage or soreness promptly.
The dentist checks the maintainer at regular visits and watches for the adult tooth. Once the permanent tooth begins to erupt, the maintainer is removed. If your family spends part of the year away from Long Point, keep checkups regular so eruption is not missed.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office soon after your child loses a baby tooth early. Mention which tooth was lost and when, so the team can arrange an assessment promptly.
Bring any records or X-rays from the dentist who removed the tooth, if it was extracted elsewhere.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. It depends on which tooth was lost, your child’s age and when the adult tooth is expected. The dentist will assess and recommend a maintainer only if space loss is likely.
Fitting is usually painless, though your child may feel pressure. Some children notice the appliance for a few days. Report persistent soreness so the dentist can check the fit.
Until the adult tooth starts to erupt, which may be months or years. The dentist monitors progress at regular visits and removes the maintainer at the right time.
Contact the office. Keep any loose parts. A broken maintainer may not hold space properly and could irritate the mouth, so prompt repair or replacement is important.
Mostly, yes. Avoid sticky, chewy and very hard foods that can damage the appliance. Cutting food into smaller pieces may help, especially in the first few days.
Crowding, crossbites and jaw growth can be watched before all adult teeth arrive. Long Point families can book an early orthodontic assessment in Port Dover.
Regular checkups follow a child’s teeth as they grow. Long Point families can book children’s dental exams in Port Dover and learn what each visit looks at.
