Caring for La Salette patients at our Port Dover office
See every dental service for La SaletteHolding room for adult teeth
Baby teeth act as natural placeholders for the adult teeth developing underneath. If one is lost early because of decay, injury or extraction, neighbouring teeth can drift into the gap. This can leave too little room for the permanent tooth and lead to crowding. A space maintainer helps hold the space open.
If your child in La Salette has lost a baby tooth early, the dentist at our Port Dover office can assess whether a space maintainer is needed. Not every early loss requires one, and the decision depends on the tooth, your child’s age and development.

When it is needed
Space maintainers are most often considered when a baby molar is lost early, since these teeth hold space for premolars that may not erupt for years. The dentist will look at X-rays to see how far along the adult tooth is and how much time remains before it comes in.
If the adult tooth is about to erupt, or if the lost tooth is a front baby tooth, a space maintainer may not be needed. The dentist will explain the reasoning and may recommend monitoring instead. Each situation is assessed individually.
Types
Fixed space maintainers are cemented to nearby teeth and stay in place until the adult tooth starts to erupt. A common design uses a band around one tooth with a wire extending across the gap. They are often chosen for young children because they do not need to be removed.
Removable space maintainers look similar to retainers and can be taken out for cleaning. They may include replacement teeth for appearance. They require the child to wear them consistently. The dentist will recommend the design best suited to your child’s needs.
Fitting
The dentist may fit a band on the supporting tooth and take an impression or scan of the area. The space maintainer is then made to fit. At a follow-up visit, it is checked and cemented into place. No numbing is usually needed for placement.
Your child may feel pressure or notice the appliance with their tongue for a few days. Speech and eating should adjust quickly. Avoid sticky or hard foods that could damage or loosen it. Let the office know if it feels loose or causes pain.
Care and removal
Help your child brush around the space maintainer carefully, as food and plaque can collect around bands and wires. Avoid sticky candies, chewing gum and hard foods. Discourage pushing on it with fingers or tongue, which can bend or loosen it.
The dentist will check the space maintainer at regular visits and track the developing adult tooth with X-rays. When the permanent tooth begins to erupt, the appliance is removed. Contact the office if it breaks, comes loose or your child complains of discomfort.
Planning your appointment
If your child has lost a baby tooth early, book an assessment at our Port Dover office. The dentist will discuss whether a space maintainer is recommended.

Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. It depends on which tooth was lost, your child’s age and when the adult tooth is expected. The dentist will assess and explain whether one is recommended.
Most children adjust within a few days. Some pressure or awareness of the appliance is normal at first. Report pain or looseness to the office.
Until the adult tooth begins to come in, which could be months or years. The dentist will monitor development and remove it at the right time.
Sticky candies, chewing gum, hard foods and anything that could pull on or bend the appliance. The dentist will provide a list of foods to avoid.
Contact the office promptly. Keep the appliance if it comes out. A loose maintainer may need to be recemented or replaced to continue holding the space.
An early orthodontic check can flag crossbites, crowding or habits while a child is still growing. La Salette families can see what is checked and why.
A child’s dental exam checks growth, decay risk and habits. La Salette parents can see what happens in Port Dover and how to keep checkups relaxed.
