Every dental service for Jarvis patientsHolding room for adult teeth
Baby teeth act as natural placeholders for the adult teeth developing beneath them. If a baby tooth is lost early because of decay or injury, neighbouring teeth may shift into the space, leaving less room for the permanent tooth. A space maintainer is a small appliance that holds the gap open until the adult tooth is ready.
Parents in Jarvis whose child lost a baby tooth early can ask our Port Dover dentist whether a space maintainer is needed. Not every gap requires one, and the decision depends on several factors.

When needed
The dentist considers which tooth was lost, your child’s age, how soon the adult tooth is expected to erupt and the available space. Baby molars are often more important for space than front teeth. X-rays help show the position and development of the adult tooth underneath.
If the adult tooth is close to erupting, or if the space is unlikely to close, a maintainer may not be necessary. Sometimes the dentist recommends monitoring the space at regular checkups instead. The reasons for or against a maintainer will be explained to you.
Types
Fixed maintainers are cemented to one or more teeth and often consist of a band and a wire loop that holds the space. They stay in place until removed by the dentist, which means your child cannot lose or forget them. They are commonly used for back teeth.
Removable maintainers resemble a retainer and can sometimes include a false tooth for appearance. They require your child to wear them consistently and take good care of them. The dentist will recommend the type that suits your child’s age, the tooth lost and their ability to manage it.
Getting one
The dentist takes impressions or a scan of your child’s teeth, and the maintainer is made to fit. At the next visit, it is checked and cemented or fitted. Your child may feel pressure but usually no pain. The team will explain how to care for it at home.
Your child may notice the appliance with their tongue for a few days. Speech is rarely affected with fixed maintainers. Avoid sticky or very hard foods that could loosen or bend it. Let the office know if your child complains of discomfort or the appliance feels loose.
Care and removal
Brush around the maintainer carefully, especially where bands meet the teeth. Food can collect around wires. Help younger children with brushing. For removable maintainers, clean the appliance daily and store it in its case when not in use. Keep it away from pets.
The dentist checks the maintainer at regular visits and monitors the adult tooth’s progress. When the permanent tooth begins to erupt, the maintainer is removed. Call the office if it breaks, loosens or comes out, so it can be repaired or replaced promptly.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office if your child has lost a baby tooth early. The dentist can assess whether a space maintainer is advisable.
Bring details of how and when the tooth was lost, and any X-rays or records from previous dental care.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. It depends on which tooth was lost, your child’s age and how soon the adult tooth will erupt. The dentist will assess each situation.
Until the adult tooth starts to come in, which may be months or years. The dentist monitors progress and removes it at the right time.
Most children adjust quickly. There may be some initial awareness or pressure. Let the office know if discomfort persists.
Sticky candies, gum and very hard foods can loosen or damage the maintainer. Encourage soft, healthy choices and careful chewing.
Call the office. Keep the appliance if it comes out, and avoid putting it back yourself. The dentist can recement or replace it.
An early look at a child’s bite can flag crowding, crossbites or habits worth watching. Jarvis parents can learn what an assessment covers and when follow-up is advised.
Routine exams track how a child’s teeth, bite and jaws develop. Jarvis families can book children’s checkups at our Port Dover office and ask questions along the way.
