Baby teeth act as natural placeholders for the adult teeth developing beneath them. If a baby tooth is lost too early because of decay, injury or extraction, neighbouring teeth can drift into the gap. That can leave too little room for the adult tooth, potentially causing crowding or teeth coming in out of position. A space maintainer is an appliance designed to keep that space open.
Hillcrest families whose child has lost a baby tooth early can have the situation assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain whether a space maintainer is needed, which type suits the gap and how it will be monitored as your child grows.

When needed
The dentist considers which tooth was lost, your child’s age, how far the adult tooth has developed and how soon it is likely to come in. Back baby molars are often the most important to hold space for. X-rays help show the position and development of the adult tooth. These factors together determine whether a maintainer is likely to make a meaningful difference.
If the adult tooth is close to coming through, or if the lost tooth was a front baby tooth where drifting is less common, the dentist may recommend simply monitoring the space. In these cases, regular checkups track how the gap changes. The dentist will explain why they recommend monitoring or an appliance, so you can understand the decision.
Types
Fixed space maintainers are cemented to one or more teeth and usually consist of a metal band with a wire loop extending across the gap. Because they stay in place, children do not need to remember to wear them. They need careful cleaning around the band and must be checked regularly to ensure they remain secure and are not interfering with tooth eruption.
Removable maintainers resemble small retainers and may include artificial teeth for appearance or chewing. They can be taken out for cleaning but rely on the child wearing them as directed. They may suit older children who can manage them responsibly. The dentist will recommend a design based on the location of the gap and your child’s age and habits.
Fitting
At the first visit, the dentist may fit a band to the supporting tooth and take an impression or scan of the area. These are used to make the appliance. The process is generally comfortable and does not require freezing. The team will explain each step to your child in simple terms so they know what to expect at both appointments.
At the second visit, the maintainer is checked for fit and either cemented in place or demonstrated for removable designs. Your child may feel some pressure or notice the appliance with their tongue for a few days. The dentist will give instructions on eating, cleaning and what to do if the appliance feels loose or uncomfortable.
Living with it
Help your child brush carefully around the bands and wires, since food can collect there. Avoid sticky sweets, chewing gum and very hard foods that can loosen or bend the appliance. Discourage pushing or pulling on it with fingers or the tongue. If a removable appliance is used, ensure it is worn as instructed and kept in its case when out of the mouth.
The dentist checks the maintainer at regular visits to confirm it fits and that the adult tooth is developing as expected. Once the adult tooth begins to come through, the appliance is removed. Contact the office if the maintainer comes loose, breaks, causes soreness or your child accidentally swallows part of it, so the team can advise on next steps.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office if your child has lost a baby tooth early through injury, decay or extraction. The dentist can assess whether a space maintainer is needed and explain the timing of any appointments.
If the tooth was removed by another dentist, bring any X-rays or records you have so the assessment can be as accurate as possible.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
In some cases leaving the gap is fine, especially if the adult tooth will arrive soon. In others, nearby teeth can drift and block the adult tooth. The dentist will assess your child’s situation and explain whether an appliance is likely to help.
Fitting a maintainer is generally comfortable and does not require freezing. Children may feel pressure or notice the appliance with their tongue for a few days. Persistent soreness or rubbing should be reported so the dentist can check the fit.
Usually until the adult tooth begins to come through, which may be months or a few years depending on development. The dentist monitors progress with regular checkups and X-rays and removes the appliance at the right time.
Most foods are fine, but sticky sweets, gum and very hard foods should be avoided, as they can loosen or damage the appliance. Cutting food into smaller pieces may help at first while your child gets used to it.
Contact the office promptly. Keep the appliance if it comes out, and avoid trying to push it back in. A loose maintainer may need recementing or repair, and the dentist will advise how soon your child should be seen.
Some bite and spacing problems are easier to guide while a child is still growing. Hillcrest parents can book an early orthodontic look in Port Dover.
