Holding room for adult teeth

An early gap can affect where adult teeth come in.

Baby teeth act as placeholders for the adult teeth developing underneath. If a baby molar is lost too early, through decay or injury, the neighbouring teeth can drift into the gap. That can leave too little room for the adult tooth, leading to crowding or a blocked tooth. A space maintainer is a small appliance that keeps the gap open until the adult tooth is ready.

Hagersville families can have their child assessed for a space maintainer at our Port Dover office. Fitting usually involves a couple of short visits, which can often be scheduled with your child’s regular checkups to limit extra trips.

When it’s needed

Not every early gap needs a space maintainer.

Early loss of baby teeth

A space maintainer is most often recommended when a baby molar is lost early and the adult tooth beneath is not expected to arrive for some time. Back teeth are more prone to drifting than front teeth. The dentist considers your child’s age, which tooth was lost, how much space exists and X-rays showing the developing tooth.

When a maintainer may not be needed

If the adult tooth is close to erupting, or the gap is in an area that tends to stay stable, a maintainer may not be necessary. Sometimes monitoring is enough. The dentist will explain the reasoning and whether waiting could lead to problems. Early loss of front baby teeth is often managed differently from back teeth.

Types of maintainers

The design depends on the tooth and your child’s needs.

Fixed maintainers

Fixed maintainers are cemented to one or more teeth and cannot be taken out by your child. A common type is the band-and-loop, which wraps around a neighbouring tooth with a wire extending across the gap. Fixed designs are often preferred for younger children because they do not rely on the child remembering to wear them.

Removable maintainers

Removable maintainers look similar to retainers and can be taken out for cleaning. They may include artificial teeth to fill visible gaps. They require your child to wear them consistently and take care not to lose or damage them. The dentist will recommend the design that best suits the situation.

Getting one fitted

Fitting is quick and usually comfortable.

  1. Taking records

At the first visit, the dentist may place small spacers or bands to check fit and then take an impression or scan. The maintainer is then made to these records. The process does not usually require freezing. Explain to your child that the dentist is making a special helper to save space for a new tooth.

  2. Fitting the appliance

At the fitting visit, the maintainer is checked for fit and comfort, then cemented in place or adjusted for removal. Your child may notice it with their tongue for a few days. The dentist will explain how to care for it and what to watch for before you head home to Hagersville.

Looking after it

Care at home helps the maintainer do its job.

  • Cleaning and food choices

Brush around the maintainer carefully, including the bands and wires, as food can collect there. Avoid sticky foods like toffee and chewy candy, and hard foods like ice, which can loosen or bend the appliance. Discourage your child from pushing on it with their tongue or fingers. Removable maintainers should be cleaned daily.

  • Regular checks and removal

The dentist checks the maintainer at regular visits and monitors the developing adult tooth with X-rays. Once the adult tooth starts to erupt, the maintainer is removed. Contact the office if it becomes loose, breaks, causes pain or if a band comes off, as a damaged appliance may stop working effectively.

Planning your appointment

Planning a space maintainer from Hagersville.

Call our Port Dover office if your child has lost a baby tooth early or has had one removed. The team can arrange an assessment and explain whether a space maintainer would help.

Bring any recent X-rays from another office and mention when and how the tooth was lost, as this affects the recommendation.

Space maintainer questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Does a space maintainer hurt?

Fitting is usually comfortable and does not require freezing. Your child may feel pressure or notice the appliance for a few days. Mild soreness typically settles quickly. Contact the office if discomfort persists.

How long will my child wear it?

Until the adult tooth begins to come through, which may be months or years depending on the tooth and age. The dentist monitors progress with X-rays and removes the maintainer at the right time.

Can my child eat normally?

Most foods are fine, but avoid sticky, chewy and very hard foods that can damage or loosen the maintainer. Cutting food into smaller pieces helps. The dentist will give specific food guidance.

What if the maintainer comes loose?

Call the office promptly. Keep the appliance if it comes out completely. A loose maintainer may not hold space properly and could irritate the gums, so it should be checked and re-cemented or replaced.

Is a space maintainer the same as braces?

No. A space maintainer holds an existing gap open; it does not move teeth. Braces or other orthodontic appliances are used to move teeth into new positions. Some children may need both at different times.
