Caring for Forestville patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for ForestvilleHolding room for what comes next
Baby teeth act as natural placeholders for the adult teeth developing beneath them. When one is lost early because of decay, injury or extraction, neighbouring teeth can drift into the empty space. That can leave too little room for the adult tooth, leading to crowding or a tooth that comes in out of position. A space maintainer is a small appliance designed to prevent that drift.
Forestville families whose child has lost a baby tooth early can have the gap assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist explains whether a space maintainer is needed, which type would suit the situation and how long it is likely to stay in place.

Is one needed?
Early loss of a baby molar is the most common reason for a space maintainer, since back teeth play a big role in holding space and the adult premolars may not arrive for years. The dentist considers your child’s age, which tooth was lost, how far along the adult tooth is and how the bite looks before recommending an appliance.
If the adult tooth is close to coming through, or if a front baby tooth was lost, a space maintainer may not be necessary. X-rays help show how developed the adult tooth is. The dentist explains the reasoning, and if monitoring is suggested instead, describes what to watch for at home between regular checkups and visits.
Types
Fixed maintainers are cemented to a neighbouring tooth and use a small wire loop to hold the space open. Some span both sides of the mouth with a wire behind the front teeth. Because they stay in place, children cannot lose them or forget to wear them, which makes fixed designs a common choice for younger patients.
Removable maintainers look similar to a retainer and can sometimes include a replacement tooth for appearance. They work well for older, responsible children but must be worn as directed to be effective. The dentist explains which design suits your child’s age, the location of the gap and how well they are likely to manage a removable appliance.
Getting fitted
At the first visit, the dentist may place small spacers or simply take impressions or a scan of the teeth. A band may be fitted to the anchor tooth. Explain to your child that the dentist is making a special helper to save room for a new tooth. Most children find this step easy, though some dislike the texture of impression material.
When the maintainer is ready, the dentist checks the fit and cements it in place or shows you and your child how to insert and remove a removable type. Your child may feel some pressure or notice the wire with their tongue for a few days. Planning this follow-up visit from Forestville ahead of time keeps the process moving.
Care and removal
Brush carefully around the bands and wire to keep the anchor tooth healthy. Avoid sticky candies, gum and very hard foods that could loosen or bend the appliance. Discourage your child from pushing on the wire with their tongue or fingers. If the maintainer comes loose, bends or causes soreness, call the office and keep any loose parts.
The dentist checks the maintainer at regular visits and watches the adult tooth’s progress on X-rays. Once the adult tooth begins to come through, the appliance is removed, usually in a quick visit. Ask how long the maintainer is likely to stay so you know what to expect over the coming months or years of growth.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office if your child has lost a baby tooth early. The team can arrange an exam to assess the gap and explain whether a space maintainer would help.
Mention how the tooth was lost and when, and bring any records from another dentist who may have removed it or treated the area.

Neighbouring teeth can shift into the gap, leaving too little room for the adult tooth. That may lead to crowding or a tooth coming in out of position. A space maintainer helps prevent that drift while the adult tooth develops underneath.
Fitting is usually comfortable. Your child may feel pressure or notice the appliance with their tongue for a few days. Persistent soreness or rubbing should be reported so the dentist can check the fit and make any needed adjustment.
It depends on when the adult tooth is expected to arrive. Some children wear one for months, others for a few years. The dentist monitors progress at checkups and removes it once the adult tooth starts coming through.
Call the office and keep any loose pieces. Avoid letting your child play with it. A loose maintainer may not hold space properly and can irritate the gums, so it should be checked and re-cemented or replaced promptly.
Most foods are fine. Avoid sticky candies, gum and very hard foods that could bend or loosen the appliance. Cutting food into smaller pieces can help. Encourage careful brushing around the bands after meals to protect the anchor tooth.
