Caring for Fishers Glen patients at our Port Dover office
See every service for Fishers GlenHolding room for adult teeth
Baby teeth hold space in the jaw for the adult teeth developing beneath them. If a baby tooth is lost too early, through decay, injury or extraction, neighbouring teeth can drift into the gap. This can leave too little room for the adult tooth to come in properly, potentially leading to crowding or teeth erupting out of position. A space maintainer is a small appliance that keeps the gap open until the adult tooth is ready.
Parents in Fishers Glen whose child has lost a baby tooth early can ask our Port Dover dentist whether a space maintainer is needed. Not every early loss requires one, and the dentist will consider which tooth was lost, your child’s age and the development of the adult tooth.

When it is needed
Early loss of baby molars, which hold space for premolars, is more likely to cause drifting than early loss of front baby teeth. The dentist will look at which tooth was lost, how soon the adult tooth is expected and whether neighbouring teeth have already started to move. X-rays help show the developing adult tooth and how far it has formed.
If the adult tooth is expected to come in soon, a space maintainer may not be necessary. If it is still a long way off, holding the space may prevent crowding later. The dentist will explain the reasoning and discuss whether monitoring or an appliance is the better choice for your child. You can ask questions.
Types of maintainers
Fixed space maintainers are cemented to one or more teeth and use a small wire loop to hold the gap open. Common designs include a band and loop on one side, or a wire that runs behind the lower front teeth to hold space on both sides. Fixed maintainers stay in place, so children cannot lose or forget to wear them.
Removable maintainers look similar to a retainer and may include artificial teeth to fill visible gaps. They can be taken out for cleaning but rely on the child wearing them consistently. The dentist will recommend the design that suits the location of the gap, your child’s age and how reliably they can manage a removable appliance.
Getting a maintainer
At the first visit, the dentist may fit bands to the anchor teeth and take impressions or scans. The maintainer is made to fit your child’s mouth. At the next visit, it is tried in, adjusted and cemented or fitted. No freezing is usually needed. The dentist will explain each step in child-friendly language so your child knows what to expect.
Your child may feel the appliance with their tongue and notice it when eating for the first few days. Speech is rarely affected, but if it is, it usually improves quickly. Encourage your child to avoid playing with the wire. Let the office know if anything feels loose, sharp or uncomfortable. Most children adapt fast.
Care and removal
Brush carefully around the bands and wire, as food and plaque can collect there. Avoid sticky, chewy or very hard foods, such as toffee, gum and hard candy, which can loosen or bend the appliance. If your child has a removable maintainer, clean it daily and store it in its case when not in use.
The dentist checks the maintainer at regular visits to make sure it fits and is doing its job. Once the adult tooth begins to come in, the maintainer is removed, usually in a quick and comfortable appointment. Call the office if the appliance comes loose, breaks or seems to be pressing on the gum. Keep any pieces.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office if your child has lost a baby tooth early through decay, injury or extraction. The dentist will assess whether a space maintainer is needed and explain the options.
Let the team know when the tooth was lost and how, and bring any records from other dentists if the extraction was done elsewhere.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. It depends on which tooth was lost, your child’s age and how soon the adult tooth is expected. Front baby teeth often do not need one. The dentist will assess your child and explain whether a maintainer is recommended.
Fitting a space maintainer is usually comfortable and does not require freezing. Your child may feel pressure or notice the appliance at first. Any soreness typically settles quickly. The team will explain each step in simple words so your child knows what to expect.
Until the adult tooth starts to come in, which can range from months to a few years. The dentist monitors progress at regular visits and removes the maintainer when it is no longer needed. Removal is quick.
Call the office. Keep the appliance if it comes out completely and bring it to the appointment. Do not try to reattach it yourself. A loose maintainer may need to be recemented or replaced. Avoid sticky foods meanwhile.
Most foods are fine, but avoid sticky, chewy and very hard foods, which can loosen or damage the appliance. Encourage your child to chew carefully and brush well around the maintainer after meals. A mirror check helps.
An early bite check can flag crowding, crossbites or habits while a child is still growing. Fishers Glen parents can learn what is assessed in Port Dover.
A child’s dental exam tracks growing teeth, checks for early decay and builds comfort with visits. Fishers Glen families are welcome at our Port Dover practice.
