Snoring happens when relaxed tissues in the throat vibrate as air passes through a narrowed airway during sleep. It can be harmless, but it can also be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea, a medical condition that needs proper diagnosis. For people whose snoring is not caused by apnea, a custom oral appliance that gently moves the lower jaw forward may help reduce the noise.
Windham Centre patients and their partners who are tired of disrupted sleep can discuss snoring appliances at our Port Dover office. The dentist will ask about your symptoms, check your teeth and jaw and may recommend that you see your physician first to rule out sleep apnea before an appliance is made.

Snoring or apnea
Loud snoring with pauses in breathing, gasping or choking, morning headaches and daytime sleepiness may point to sleep apnea rather than simple snoring. High blood pressure and difficulty concentrating can also be linked. If a partner has noticed breathing pauses, mention it to the dentist and your physician. These signs deserve medical assessment before any treatment is chosen.
Treating snoring with an appliance without checking for sleep apnea could mask a condition that affects your overall health. A physician can arrange a sleep study to clarify what is happening at night. If apnea is ruled out or confirmed as mild, the dentist can discuss whether an oral appliance is a reasonable option alongside your doctor’s advice.
Assessment
The dentist examines your teeth, gums, bite and jaw joints, since the appliance needs healthy teeth to anchor it and comfortable joints to work. Loose teeth, active gum disease or significant jaw pain may need attention first. X-rays and impressions or scans may be taken, along with a record of how far your lower jaw can comfortably move forward.
Alcohol in the evening, sedating medications, nasal congestion, sleeping on your back and weight changes can all affect snoring. The dentist may suggest simple changes alongside an appliance, such as adjusting sleep position or treating congestion with your doctor’s guidance. Addressing these factors can improve results and sometimes reduce snoring noticeably all on their own.
The appliance
The appliance is made from impressions or scans of your teeth and fits over both upper and lower arches. It holds the lower jaw slightly forward, which can help keep the airway more open during sleep. Custom devices are generally more comfortable and secure than store-bought versions, which may not fit well and can place uneven pressure on the teeth.
At the fitting appointment, the dentist checks the fit and shows you how to insert, remove and clean the appliance. The jaw position is often adjusted gradually over a few weeks to balance effectiveness and comfort. Ask your partner to note any change in snoring so you can report progress at follow-up visits and fine-tune the setting.
Long-term use
Some people experience mild jaw stiffness, tooth tenderness or extra saliva at first, which usually settles as they adapt. Over time, appliances can cause small changes in how the teeth meet, so the dentist will monitor your bite at regular visits. Report persistent jaw pain, loose teeth or sore gums so the appliance can be adjusted or reassessed.
Clean the appliance daily with a soft brush and cool water and store it in its case. Bring it to checkups so the dentist can examine it for wear or cracks. If snoring returns, or if you develop daytime tiredness or breathing pauses, speak with your physician again, since your sleep health may have changed over time.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to discuss a snoring appliance. Windham Centre patients can mention whether they have had a sleep study and what a partner has noticed, so the dentist can advise on the right next step.
Bring any sleep study results or physician notes, along with a list of medications that might affect your sleep or breathing.

Often, yes. Snoring can be a sign of sleep apnea, which needs medical diagnosis. The dentist may recommend that your physician arrange a sleep study before an appliance is made, so a more serious condition is not overlooked.
Many people find snoring is reduced, but results vary. Factors such as nasal congestion, alcohol and sleep position also play a role. The dentist will adjust the appliance and may suggest other changes to help improve results.
Some people find them helpful, but they often fit poorly and can cause discomfort or uneven pressure on teeth. A custom appliance is shaped to your mouth and can be adjusted gradually, which may improve comfort and effectiveness.
Over time, some people notice small changes in how their teeth meet. The dentist monitors your bite at regular visits and can recommend adjustments or exercises if needed. Report any changes in your bite that concern you.
Rinse it after use, brush gently with a soft toothbrush and cool water, and store it in its case to dry. Avoid hot water, which can warp the material. Bring it to dental visits so its condition and fit can be checked.
