Snoring happens when airflow causes soft tissues in the throat to vibrate during sleep. It can disturb partners and affect sleep quality. While some snoring is harmless, it can also be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea, a medical condition that needs proper diagnosis. A custom dental appliance can reduce snoring for some people by helping keep the airway more open.
Walsingham patients bothered by snoring can talk with the dentist at our Port Dover office about whether an appliance may help. The dentist will usually recommend checking with your physician first to rule out sleep apnea, then assess your teeth and jaw to see whether an appliance is suitable.

Rule out apnea
Loud, frequent snoring with gasping, choking or pauses in breathing, along with daytime sleepiness, morning headaches or high blood pressure, can suggest sleep apnea. Treating only the snoring without addressing sleep apnea could mask a serious condition. Ask your partner to describe your snoring if possible.
Your physician can assess your symptoms and may arrange a sleep study. If sleep apnea is ruled out or confirmed as mild, an oral appliance may be considered. If you have already had a sleep study, bring the results to your dental consultation.
How it works
Most snoring appliances are worn over the upper and lower teeth and hold the lower jaw slightly forward during sleep. This can tighten the tissues and increase space in the airway, reducing vibration. Many designs allow gradual adjustment to find a comfortable, effective position.
Candidates need healthy teeth and gums and enough teeth to anchor the appliance. People with jaw joint problems, loose teeth or extensive dental work may not be suitable. The dentist examines your mouth and jaw before recommending an appliance and explains its potential benefits and limits.
Getting fitted
The dentist takes impressions or scans of your teeth and records your bite. These are used to create a custom appliance. At the fitting visit, you will learn how to insert, remove and clean it. The initial position is set, and you start wearing it at night.
Follow-up visits allow the dentist to adjust the appliance for comfort and effectiveness. Your partner’s feedback on snoring levels can be helpful. If snoring does not improve or new symptoms develop, the dentist may recommend speaking with your physician again.
Living with it
Some people notice jaw soreness, tooth tenderness or extra saliva at first, which often improves. Over time, bite changes can occur, so the dentist monitors this at regular visits. Report persistent jaw pain, bite changes or discomfort.
Clean the appliance daily as instructed and store it in its case. Bring it to dental checkups so it can be checked for wear and fit. Lifestyle factors like weight, alcohol before bed and sleeping position can also affect snoring, so these may be discussed.
Planning your appointment
Walsingham patients can call our Port Dover office to discuss snoring. Mention whether you have seen a physician or had a sleep study, so the team can plan the right next step.
Bring any sleep study results, a medication list and your partner’s observations about your snoring if they are able to share them.

It is strongly recommended. Snoring can be a sign of sleep apnea. A physician can determine whether a sleep study is needed before a dental appliance is considered.
Many people experience reduced snoring, but results vary. The appliance may be adjusted to improve effectiveness. Other factors may also contribute.
Some people feel jaw or tooth tenderness at first. This usually improves. Report ongoing discomfort so the dentist can adjust the appliance.
Over-the-counter devices may not fit well and are not designed to treat sleep apnea. A custom appliance is fitted to your teeth and adjusted by the dentist.
It depends on wear and care. Many last several years. Regular checkups help monitor its condition and decide when replacement is needed.
Diagnosed with sleep apnea? Walsingham patients can learn how a dental oral appliance may fit into medical treatment, who is suitable and how fit and follow-up work.
Clicking, aching or a jaw that locks can point to a TMJ problem. Walsingham patients can learn how jaw disorders are assessed and which conservative treatments may help.
