Caring for Villa Nova patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Villa NovaQuieter nights, safely
Snoring happens when relaxed tissues in the throat vibrate as air passes through during sleep. It can disrupt a partner’s rest and sometimes your own. A custom oral appliance that gently holds the lower jaw forward may help keep the airway more open and reduce snoring. However, loud snoring can also be a sign of sleep apnea, which needs medical assessment.
If snoring is a concern in your Villa Nova household, our Port Dover office can discuss whether an oral appliance might help. The dentist may suggest speaking with your physician first to rule out sleep apnea.

Snoring or apnea
Snoring alone can be a nuisance, but when it comes with pauses in breathing, gasping or choking, it may indicate obstructive sleep apnea. Treating snoring without addressing apnea could mask a serious condition. For this reason, the dentist may recommend a medical evaluation before fitting a snoring appliance.
Tell your physician if you wake unrefreshed, feel sleepy during the day, have morning headaches or high blood pressure, or if a partner notices breathing pauses. A sleep study may be suggested. If apnea is ruled out, a snoring appliance may be a reasonable option to explore.
Candidacy
You need enough healthy teeth to hold the appliance, healthy gums and jaw joints that can tolerate gentle forward positioning. The dentist will examine your mouth and check for problems such as jaw pain, loose teeth or untreated decay that may need attention first.
Weight, alcohol in the evening, sleeping on your back, nasal congestion and certain medications can contribute to snoring. The dentist may mention these factors, as addressing them can complement an appliance. In some cases, a referral to an ear, nose and throat specialist may be suggested.
Getting fitted
Impressions or scans of your teeth and a bite record are taken. The appliance is made to fit your teeth and hold the lower jaw in a slightly forward position. Mention any gag reflex or jaw sensitivity during the process.
When delivered, the fit is checked and you are shown how to wear and clean the appliance. Adjustments may be made over several visits to balance effectiveness with comfort. Ask your partner for feedback on whether snoring has improved.
Living with it
Jaw soreness, tooth tenderness and extra saliva or dryness are common in the first weeks and often settle. Report persistent discomfort or changes in your bite. Clean the appliance daily and store it in its case.
Bring the appliance to dental checkups so the fit and wear can be assessed. Appliances eventually need replacement. If snoring returns or new symptoms like daytime sleepiness develop, contact both your dentist and physician.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to ask about snoring appliances. Mention whether you have seen a physician about your snoring or had a sleep study.
Ask your partner to describe what they notice at night, such as gasping or breathing pauses, and share this with the dentist.
