Snoring happens when the soft tissues of the throat vibrate as air passes through a narrowed airway during sleep. It can disrupt your own rest and that of anyone sharing the room. For some people, a custom oral appliance that gently holds the lower jaw forward can reduce snoring by helping keep the airway more open through the night.
Because snoring can sometimes be a sign of sleep apnea, the dentist at our Port Dover office will ask about your symptoms and may recommend speaking with your physician first. For Vanessa-area patients who are cleared for an appliance, the dentist can then assess, fit and adjust one over a few visits.

Is it just snoring
Loud snoring combined with pauses in breathing, gasping or choking at night, morning headaches, daytime sleepiness or high blood pressure can be signs of obstructive sleep apnea. This is a medical condition that needs proper diagnosis through a sleep study. If any of these signs apply, speak with your physician before using a snoring appliance, so a more serious problem is not missed.
If sleep apnea has been ruled out, snoring may simply be related to sleep position, nasal congestion, weight, alcohol or the anatomy of your mouth and throat. In these cases, an oral appliance may be one option, along with changes such as sleeping on your side or reducing alcohol before bed. The dentist will explain the realistic benefits.
How they work
Most snoring appliances work by moving the lower jaw slightly forward, which can help prevent the tongue and soft tissues from narrowing the airway. They fit over the teeth like a mouthguard. Some designs are adjustable, allowing the dentist to change the jaw position gradually to find a balance between effectiveness and comfort for you.
Store-bought snoring devices are widely available, but they may fit poorly, cause jaw discomfort or affect your bite. A custom appliance made from impressions or scans of your teeth is designed to fit closely and can be adjusted. The dentist will examine your teeth, gums and jaw joints to see whether an appliance is suitable for you.
Getting fitted
The dentist reviews your health history, asks about your snoring and sleep, and examines your teeth, gums and jaw. If your physician has already ruled out sleep apnea, bring any relevant information. Impressions or scans are taken so the appliance can be made, and the dentist explains how to wear and care for it at home.
At the fitting, the dentist checks comfort and fit and makes initial adjustments. You may return for further adjustments over the following weeks to improve results. Ask a bed partner to let you know how your snoring changes. If you notice new symptoms, such as daytime tiredness, mention them to your physician as well as the dentist.
Living with it
Some people notice jaw stiffness, tooth tenderness, extra saliva or dry mouth, especially in the first weeks. Your bite may feel slightly different in the morning but usually returns to normal within a short time. The dentist may suggest jaw exercises or adjustments. Report ongoing pain, bite changes or loose teeth to the office promptly.
Rinse and gently brush the appliance each morning with cool water and mild soap, then let it dry and store it in its case. Avoid hot water, which can warp it. Bring the appliance to regular dental visits so the dentist can check its condition, your teeth and your bite over time, and adjust it if needed.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to ask about a snoring appliance. The dentist will ask about your symptoms and may suggest speaking with your physician first to rule out sleep apnea before an appliance is made.
Bring any sleep study results or notes from your physician, and ask a bed partner to describe your snoring if possible.

Many people find snoring is reduced, but results vary. Factors such as sleep position, alcohol, nasal congestion and weight also play a role. The dentist will explain what you might realistically expect and which habits may help alongside the appliance.
If you have signs of sleep apnea, such as pauses in breathing, gasping or daytime sleepiness, a sleep study through your physician is important before using an appliance. Snoring alone may not require one, but discuss it with your doctor.
Some people notice tooth tenderness or minor bite changes, especially at first. The dentist monitors your teeth and bite at regular visits and adjusts the appliance as needed to reduce side effects. Tell the team if anything feels different.
A custom appliance is designed to fit your teeth closely and can be adjusted, which often improves comfort and effectiveness. Store-bought devices may fit poorly and can sometimes cause jaw discomfort or bite changes that go unnoticed.
With good care, many appliances last several years, though wear and changes in your teeth can affect fit. Bring it to checkups so the dentist can monitor its condition and recommend replacement when it is needed.
