Snoring happens when relaxed tissues in the throat vibrate as air passes through during sleep. It can disrupt your own rest and that of anyone sharing a room. For some people, a custom oral appliance that holds the lower jaw slightly forward can reduce snoring by keeping the airway more open.
If snoring is a concern at home or around the cottage, Turkey Point patients can ask about snoring appliances at our Port Dover office. The dentist will ask about your sleep and may recommend a medical evaluation first.

Snoring or sleep apnea
Simple snoring may be occasional or steady and is not accompanied by breathing pauses or significant daytime fatigue. It can be influenced by sleeping position, alcohol, nasal congestion and weight. While it can be disruptive, it is generally not associated with the health risks of sleep apnea.
Pauses in breathing, choking or gasping during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, morning headaches and high blood pressure may indicate obstructive sleep apnea. This is a medical condition that needs diagnosis by a physician. If these signs are present, the dentist will recommend you see your doctor before an appliance is considered.
Assessment
The dentist asks about your snoring, how long it has been happening, whether a partner has noticed breathing pauses and how rested you feel during the day. Information from a bed partner can be very helpful. If a sleep study has been done, bring the results to the appointment.
Your teeth, gums, bite and jaw joints are examined to see whether an appliance is suitable. You need healthy teeth to anchor it, and your jaw needs to tolerate a forward position. Gum disease or jaw problems may need treatment first. The dentist will explain any concerns.
The appliance
Impressions or scans of your teeth are taken, along with a bite record in a slightly forward jaw position. A laboratory then fabricates the appliance. Custom appliances are designed to fit closely and can usually be adjusted, which is important for finding the most comfortable and effective position.
At the fitting, the dentist checks comfort and shows you how to insert, remove and clean the appliance. The jaw position may be adjusted gradually over several visits. Ask your partner to report whether snoring has improved, and share your own observations on sleep quality.
Living with it
Wear the appliance nightly as directed. Temporary jaw soreness, drooling or a feeling that your bite is off in the morning are common at first and often settle. Clean the appliance daily and store it in its case. Keep it out of reach of pets and away from heat.
Bring the appliance to dental visits so fit and wear can be checked. Report persistent jaw pain, tooth discomfort or bite changes. If daytime sleepiness develops or a partner notices breathing pauses, see your doctor, as these may indicate sleep apnea needing medical evaluation.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to discuss snoring and whether an oral appliance might help. Share any information about your sleep, including observations from a partner.
Bring sleep study results if you have them. If you have not had a medical evaluation, the dentist may recommend one first.

Many people find snoring is reduced, but results vary. The dentist will adjust the appliance to find the most effective position.
If there are signs of sleep apnea, a medical evaluation is important before using a snoring appliance. The dentist will advise.
No. A night guard protects against grinding. A snoring appliance positions the jaw to help keep the airway open.
Some people notice bite changes over time. Regular dental checkups help monitor and manage any changes.
Sleeping on your side, limiting alcohol before bed and treating nasal congestion may help. Your doctor can also offer guidance.
Oral appliances may be an option for some people with diagnosed sleep apnea. Turkey Point patients can learn how dentists work alongside physicians on this care.
Clicking, aching or a jaw that locks can point to TMJ problems. Turkey Point patients can learn how jaw pain is assessed and which conservative steps may help.
