Snoring happens when relaxed tissues in the throat vibrate as air passes through a narrowed airway during sleep. It can disrupt your rest and that of anyone sharing your room. Some snoring is harmless, but it can also be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea. A custom oral appliance that positions the lower jaw forward may help reduce snoring for some people.
St. Williams residents bothered by snoring can talk with our Port Dover team about whether an oral appliance is appropriate. Because snoring can signal sleep apnea, we will discuss your symptoms and may recommend seeing your physician before an appliance is made.

Understanding snoring
Nasal congestion, sleeping on your back, alcohol before bed, weight gain and the shape of your airway can all contribute to snoring. Some people snore only occasionally, while others snore nightly. Lifestyle changes, such as adjusting sleep position, may help some people.
Loud snoring with pauses in breathing, gasping or choking, morning headaches and excessive daytime sleepiness may indicate sleep apnea. This is a medical condition that requires a proper diagnosis. Mention these symptoms to your dentist and physician so appropriate assessment can be arranged.
Is an appliance right
Oral appliances may help people with simple snoring once sleep apnea has been ruled out or is being managed by a physician. They can be a useful option for those who want to reduce snoring without other devices. The dentist will discuss your symptoms and goals before recommending one.
Healthy teeth and gums are needed to anchor the appliance. Jaw joint problems, loose teeth or extensive dental work may affect suitability. The dentist will examine your mouth and jaw and explain whether an appliance is likely to work well for you.
Getting fitted
The dentist takes impressions or scans of your teeth and records your bite and jaw movement. The appliance is then made by a laboratory. It is designed to hold the lower jaw slightly forward during sleep, helping keep the airway more open.
At the fitting, the dentist checks comfort and fit and shows you how to use and clean the appliance. Adjustments may be made over several weeks to find the most effective position. Ask your bed partner to note whether snoring improves.
Ongoing care
Some people notice jaw stiffness, tooth tenderness or changes in saliva when they start wearing the appliance. These often settle. If discomfort persists, the appliance can be adjusted. Morning jaw exercises may be recommended to help your bite return to its normal position.
Bring the appliance to regular checkups so the dentist can check fit and wear and monitor your bite. Clean it daily and store it in its case. If snoring returns, symptoms of sleep apnea develop or the appliance becomes uncomfortable, contact the office.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to discuss snoring concerns. Let us know about daytime tiredness or breathing pauses, as these may suggest a medical assessment is needed first.
If you have had a sleep study, bring the results; if not, your family physician can advise whether one is appropriate.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No, but it can be. Loud snoring with breathing pauses, gasping or daytime sleepiness should be assessed by a physician to rule out sleep apnea.
A medical assessment is often recommended to rule out sleep apnea. The dentist can discuss whether this is appropriate based on your symptoms.
Some people find them helpful, but they may fit poorly and cause jaw discomfort. Custom appliances are made to fit your teeth and can be adjusted.
There may be an adjustment period with mild jaw or tooth soreness. These usually improve. The dentist can adjust the appliance if discomfort continues.
Sleeping on your side, avoiding alcohol before bed and managing nasal congestion can help some people. An appliance may be considered if snoring persists.
