Snoring happens when relaxed tissues in the throat vibrate as air passes through a narrowed airway. It can disturb a partner’s sleep and sometimes your own. While often harmless, snoring can also be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea, a medical condition that needs diagnosis. Ruling that out is an important first step.
If snoring is a concern in your Port Ryerse household, our Port Dover office can discuss whether a custom oral appliance might help. The dentist will ask about symptoms that could suggest sleep apnea and recommend speaking with your physician if testing seems appropriate.

Rule out sleep apnea
Pauses in breathing, gasping or choking during sleep, waking unrefreshed, morning headaches, daytime sleepiness, poor concentration and high blood pressure can be associated with sleep apnea. If any of these apply, speak with your physician before pursuing a snoring appliance, as testing may be needed.
Treating snoring without checking for sleep apnea could mask a condition linked with other health risks. A physician can arrange a sleep study if needed. If sleep apnea is ruled out, a snoring appliance may be considered. If it is diagnosed, treatment options can be discussed together.
How appliances work
Most snoring appliances are similar to sleep apnea devices. They fit over the upper and lower teeth and gently move the lower jaw forward during sleep. This can increase space at the back of the throat and reduce tissue vibration. Custom devices are adjustable to balance comfort and effectiveness.
People whose snoring is related to jaw position or tongue placement may respond well. Results vary. Snoring caused by nasal congestion, alcohol, sleeping position or weight may respond better to other measures. The dentist and physician can help identify contributing factors.
Getting an appliance
The dentist examines teeth, gums and jaw joints to make sure they can support an appliance. Sufficient healthy teeth are needed for retention. Impressions or scans are taken, and the device is custom-made. Discuss any jaw pain, clicking or dental work planned in the near future.
At the fitting, the dentist checks comfort and explains how to insert, remove and adjust the device. Jaw advancement may be increased gradually. A follow-up visit allows fine-tuning. Ask your partner for feedback on snoring levels to help guide adjustments.
Living with it
Some people experience jaw soreness, tooth tenderness, dry mouth or excess saliva in the first weeks. Morning bite changes usually settle shortly after removing the device. Report persistent discomfort. Over time, appliances can cause gradual bite changes, which the dentist will monitor.
Clean the device daily and store it in its case. Bring it to dental visits for inspection. If snoring returns, daytime fatigue develops or your health changes, let your dentist and physician know, as reassessment may be needed.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book an assessment, and mention any symptoms beyond snoring. The dentist may recommend speaking with your physician before an appliance is made.
A bed partner’s observations about breathing pauses or gasping can be very useful, so bring notes if possible.

Results vary. Many people experience reduced snoring, but not everyone. Other factors such as nasal congestion, alcohol and sleep position may also contribute.
If you have symptoms that suggest sleep apnea, your physician may recommend testing first. This helps ensure an important medical condition is not overlooked.
Some people find them helpful, but they may be uncomfortable or fit poorly, and they can affect teeth or jaws. A custom appliance is designed for your mouth and can be adjusted.
Long-term use may cause gradual changes in bite. The dentist will monitor your teeth and jaw and suggest exercises or adjustments if needed.
Rinse and gently brush it daily with cool water and a soft brush, then let it dry before storing in its case. Follow any specific cleaning instructions from the dentist.
After a medical sleep apnea diagnosis, an oral appliance may be an option for some. Port Ryerse patients can discuss suitability with our Port Dover dentist.
Jaw pain, clicking or trouble opening wide can involve the TMJ. Port Ryerse patients can have joints, muscles and bite assessed at our Port Dover office.
