Snoring happens when relaxed tissues in the throat vibrate as air passes through a narrowed airway. It can disturb a partner’s sleep and sometimes signals a more serious condition such as obstructive sleep apnea. For some people with simple snoring, a custom oral appliance that gently moves the lower jaw forward can help reduce the noise.
Peacock Point residents, along with cottagers who find snoring a problem in close quarters, can discuss snoring appliances at our Port Dover office. The dentist will check whether an appliance is suitable and whether a medical evaluation should come first.

Rule out apnea
Loud, frequent snoring with gasping, choking, pauses in breathing, morning headaches or daytime sleepiness may indicate obstructive sleep apnea. This condition can affect overall health and needs medical diagnosis. Treating only the snoring without addressing apnea could mask a serious problem.
If any warning signs are present, the dentist may recommend speaking with your physician about a sleep study before an appliance is made. Your physician can determine whether you have simple snoring or sleep apnea and recommend appropriate treatment, which may include an oral appliance.
How it works
Snoring appliances are custom-made devices worn during sleep that hold the lower jaw slightly forward. This helps keep the airway more open and may reduce vibration of throat tissues. Unlike generic devices, a custom appliance is made from impressions of your teeth and can be adjusted gradually.
Good candidates typically have healthy teeth and gums and no significant jaw joint problems. The dentist examines your teeth, bite and jaw joints. If you have dentures, loose teeth or TMJ issues, an appliance may not be suitable, and alternatives can be discussed.
Fitting
Impressions or digital scans of your teeth are taken, along with a record of your bite and jaw position. These are used to make an appliance that fits securely. The process usually takes a couple of appointments, with time between for the appliance to be made.
At the fitting, the dentist checks comfort, fit and jaw position. You will learn how to insert, remove and clean it. Adjustments may be made over the following weeks to find the most effective and comfortable setting. Feedback from a partner about snoring can help guide these adjustments.
Living with it
Some people experience mild jaw soreness, tooth tenderness or excess saliva at first. These usually improve within a few weeks. If discomfort persists, contact the office. Clean the appliance daily and store it in its case. Keep it away from heat and pets.
Bring the appliance to regular dental visits so the dentist can check fit, wear and effects on your bite. Long-term use can sometimes shift teeth slightly. Report changes in snoring, sleep quality or daytime fatigue, which may indicate a need for adjustment or medical reassessment.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to arrange an assessment for a snoring appliance. Mention any signs of sleep apnea so the dentist can advise whether a medical evaluation is needed first.
Bring any sleep study results, your physician’s contact details and a list of medications and health conditions.

Many people notice a reduction in snoring, but results vary. The appliance is adjusted over time to improve effectiveness. Feedback from a partner can help the dentist fine-tune the fit.
No. Many people snore without having sleep apnea. However, loud snoring with gasping, pauses in breathing or daytime sleepiness should be evaluated by a physician to rule out apnea.
Over-the-counter devices may not fit well and can cause jaw or tooth problems. A custom appliance is made for your mouth and monitored by a dentist. Discuss options before relying on a generic device.
Some people experience jaw soreness, tooth tenderness, dry mouth or excess saliva at first. Long-term use can affect bite. Regular dental checkups help monitor and manage these effects.
With proper care, an appliance can last several years. Wear and changes in your teeth may require adjustment or replacement. Bring it to checkups so its condition can be assessed.
