Quieter nights

A snoring appliance helps some people, after the right checks.

Snoring happens when tissues in the throat vibrate as air passes during sleep. It can disturb a partner’s rest and leave you feeling unrefreshed. Some people find relief with a custom oral appliance that holds the lower jaw slightly forward. However, snoring can also be a sign of sleep apnea, which needs medical assessment before an appliance is considered.

If you are in Nanticoke and your snoring has become a problem, the dentist at our Port Dover office can discuss whether a snoring appliance might help, and whether you should first speak with your physician about a sleep assessment.

Snoring or apnea

Snoring can sometimes signal a bigger issue.

When snoring is more than noise

Loud snoring with pauses in breathing, gasping or choking at night, morning headaches and excessive daytime sleepiness can be signs of obstructive sleep apnea. If these are present, the dentist will recommend speaking with your physician. Treating snoring alone without addressing sleep apnea could mask a condition that affects overall health. A partner’s observations are often the most useful clue, so ask them what they notice.

Why medical assessment matters

A physician can arrange a sleep study to determine whether sleep apnea is present. If it is ruled out and snoring is the main concern, an oral appliance may be considered. If sleep apnea is diagnosed, your physician and dentist can discuss whether an appliance is an appropriate part of treatment. Bringing the sleep study report to the dental visit helps the dentist plan.

How appliances work

Appliances work by keeping the airway more open.

Repositioning the jaw

Mandibular advancement appliances hold the lower jaw slightly forward during sleep, which can help keep the airway open and reduce tissue vibration. They are made to fit your teeth and may be adjustable to find an effective and comfortable position. The dentist will explain the design and how adjustments are made. Progress is usually gradual, moving the jaw a little at a time.

Custom versus store-bought

Over-the-counter snoring devices are available but may fit poorly and cause jaw discomfort or tooth movement. A custom appliance is made from impressions or scans and fitted by the dentist, which allows for better comfort and monitoring. Ask the dentist to compare options for your situation, including comfort and how each might affect your bite.

Getting started

The dentist checks teeth and jaw before fitting.

  1. Dental assessment

The dentist examines your teeth, gums, bite and jaw joints. Healthy teeth are needed to support the appliance, and jaw joint problems may affect comfort. Impressions or scans are taken, and the appliance is made to your measurements. The dentist will explain what to expect during the adjustment period. Mention any loose teeth, gum problems or planned dental work first.

  2. Fitting and adjustments

At the fitting, the appliance is checked for comfort and fit. The jaw position may be adjusted gradually over several visits. Ask a partner to note changes in snoring. Report jaw soreness, tooth discomfort or bite changes so the dentist can adjust the appliance appropriately. A few follow-up visits are normal while the right setting is found.

Living with it

Regular follow-up keeps the appliance working well.

  • Common side effects

Some people experience jaw stiffness, tooth tenderness, excess saliva or dry mouth when starting to use an appliance. These often settle with time. Morning jaw exercises may help. Long-term use can cause bite changes in some people, so the dentist will monitor your teeth and bite at checkups. Mention any change in how your teeth meet during the day.

  • Monitoring and maintenance

Clean the appliance daily as instructed and store it in its case. Bring it to dental checkups so the dentist can check fit and wear. If snoring returns, daytime fatigue develops or a partner notices breathing pauses, speak with your physician, since sleep apnea may need assessment. Weight changes and new medications can also affect snoring over time.

Snoring appliance questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Will a snoring appliance stop my snoring completely?

Results vary. Many people notice a reduction in snoring, but it may not stop entirely. The dentist can adjust the appliance to find the most effective position and will explain what to realistically expect from the appliance.

Do I need a sleep study before getting an appliance?

If you have signs of sleep apnea, such as breathing pauses, gasping or daytime fatigue, a medical assessment is recommended first. The dentist will advise based on your symptoms and history, and may suggest speaking with your doctor.

Can a snoring appliance hurt my teeth?

Some tooth tenderness and jaw stiffness are common at first. Long-term use can cause bite changes in some people. The dentist will monitor your teeth and bite and adjust the appliance as needed. Report discomfort early.

How long does it take to get used to an appliance?

Many people adjust within a few weeks. Initial discomfort, excess saliva or jaw stiffness often improve. If discomfort persists, contact the office so the dentist can check the fit and adjust it rather than stopping use.

Can I use a snoring appliance with dental work?

It depends on the type of dental work and the health of your teeth. Crowns and fillings are usually fine, but extensive work or dentures may affect suitability. The dentist will assess your situation and explain any limits.
