Every dental service for Jarvis patientsQuieter nights, safely
Snoring happens when relaxed tissues in the throat vibrate as air passes. It can disrupt a partner’s sleep and sometimes your own. A custom snoring appliance, worn at night, gently holds the lower jaw forward to help keep the airway more open. However, loud snoring can also be a sign of sleep apnea, which needs medical assessment.
Snoring is a frequent complaint from households everywhere, Jarvis included. At our Port Dover office, the dentist will ask about your sleep and may suggest speaking with your physician before an appliance is made.

Rule out apnea
Pauses in breathing, gasping or choking during sleep, waking unrefreshed, morning headaches, excessive daytime sleepiness and high blood pressure can suggest sleep apnea rather than simple snoring. A partner’s observations are especially helpful. Mention any of these symptoms during your dental visit.
If sleep apnea is suspected, your physician can arrange a sleep study. Treating snoring alone without addressing sleep apnea could mask a condition that affects your health. Once apnea is ruled out or diagnosed, the dentist can discuss whether an appliance is appropriate.
Is it suitable
Enough healthy teeth are needed to anchor the appliance, and the gums should be healthy. The dentist checks the jaw joints, since moving the jaw forward can aggravate existing problems. Loose teeth, extensive dental work or certain bite issues may affect suitability.
Weight changes, limiting alcohol before bed, sleeping on your side and treating nasal congestion can help reduce snoring for some people. These measures may be tried alongside or before an appliance. Ask the dentist and your physician what might help in your situation.
Fitting
Impressions or scans of your teeth are taken and your bite is recorded. The appliance is made to fit your teeth closely and position the lower jaw forward slightly. The dentist will explain the design and how it works before it is made.
At the fitting appointment, the appliance is tried in and adjusted. The forward position may be increased gradually over several weeks to balance effectiveness and comfort. Your partner’s feedback on snoring can help guide adjustments.
Ongoing use
Jaw stiffness, tooth tenderness, excess saliva or a slightly different bite in the morning are common early on and often ease. Exercises may be suggested to help the bite return to normal after removing it. Report persistent discomfort or bite changes so the dentist can adjust the appliance.
Clean the appliance daily and store it in its case. Bring it to checkups so the fit, wear and your bite can be monitored. If snoring returns or you develop new symptoms such as daytime fatigue, let both your dentist and physician know.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book an assessment. Mention your snoring, any breathing pauses a partner has noticed and whether you have had a sleep study.
Bring any sleep study results, your medication list and notes from your partner about your snoring pattern.
