Quieter sleep, safely

Snoring is worth addressing, but first rule out anything more serious.

Snoring happens when relaxed tissues in the throat vibrate as air passes through a narrowed airway during sleep. It can disturb a partner’s rest and leave the snorer feeling unrefreshed. While many people snore without a medical problem, loud and frequent snoring can also be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea, which needs medical assessment before any dental appliance is used.

Hillcrest patients bothered by snoring can talk with our Port Dover team about whether a custom snoring appliance is appropriate. The dentist will ask about your symptoms, check your teeth and jaw and may recommend speaking with your physician first, so that any sleep-related breathing problem is not overlooked.

Snoring or apnea?

Make sure snoring is not masking a sleep disorder.

  • Signs that need medical review

Pauses in breathing, gasping or choking during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, high blood pressure or difficulty concentrating suggest possible sleep apnea. If any of these apply, speak with your family doctor about a sleep study before considering a snoring appliance. Treating snoring alone could hide the symptoms of apnea and delay appropriate medical care.

  • Simple snoring

If a physician has ruled out sleep apnea, or your snoring is mild and not accompanied by other symptoms, an oral appliance may be considered. Lifestyle factors such as weight, alcohol before bed, sleeping position and nasal congestion can also contribute. The dentist may suggest addressing these alongside or before trying an appliance for the first time.

How appliances work

Most appliances gently move the lower jaw forward.

Repositioning the jaw

Many snoring appliances work by holding the lower jaw slightly forward during sleep, which can help keep the airway more open and reduce tissue vibration. The device fits over the upper and lower teeth like a pair of mouthguards connected together. Custom appliances are made from impressions or scans and are often adjustable so the position can be refined.

Suitability for your mouth

Enough healthy teeth are needed to anchor the appliance, and gum disease or loose teeth may need treatment first. People with jaw joint problems may find appliances uncomfortable. The dentist examines your teeth, gums and jaw movement and may take X-rays. They will explain whether an appliance is likely to be comfortable and effective for you.

Fitting

A custom appliance is fitted and fine-tuned.

  1. Impressions and fitting

The dentist takes impressions or scans of your teeth and records your bite. At the fitting visit, they check comfort and show you how to insert, remove and clean the appliance. It may feel bulky at first. Wear it each night to adjust. Mention any sharp spots, pressure on teeth or difficulty closing your lips so adjustments can be made.

  2. Adjusting over time

The jaw position may be advanced gradually over several weeks to find the balance between effectiveness and comfort. Ask your partner to note whether snoring has decreased. Follow-up visits allow the dentist to check progress and make changes. If snoring continues despite adjustments, further medical evaluation may be advisable to rule out other causes of the noise.

Long-term use

Ongoing care keeps the appliance comfortable and effective.

Cleaning and storage

Clean the appliance each morning with a soft brush and cool water, let it dry and store it in its case. Avoid hot water and harsh chemicals that could damage it. Keep it away from pets. Bring it to dental checkups so the dentist can inspect it for wear or damage and confirm that it still fits your teeth properly.

Watching for changes

Some people notice jaw stiffness or tooth tenderness in the morning, which often eases soon after removing the device. Over time, appliances can cause changes in the bite. The dentist will monitor for these. If you develop new symptoms such as daytime sleepiness or breathing pauses, speak with your physician, as sleep apnea can develop later.

Planning your appointment

Quieter nights start with a conversation.

Hillcrest patients can call our Port Dover office to discuss snoring. Mention any symptoms such as daytime tiredness or breathing pauses, and the dentist will advise whether medical assessment should come before an appliance.

If you have had a sleep study, ask your physician’s office to send the results ahead of your dental appointment.

Snoring appliance questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Will an appliance stop my snoring completely?

Many people notice reduced snoring, but results vary. Some find it stops entirely, while others see partial improvement. Lifestyle factors also affect snoring. The dentist will adjust the appliance to try to achieve the best result for you.

Do I need a sleep study first?

If you have symptoms that suggest sleep apnea, such as breathing pauses or daytime sleepiness, a sleep study through your physician is recommended first. Treating snoring alone could mask a more serious condition that needs medical management.

Are over-the-counter snoring devices effective?

Some help a little, but they may fit poorly, be uncomfortable or affect the bite. Custom appliances are made for your teeth and can be adjusted. The dentist can explain the differences and whether a custom device is worthwhile.

Can a snoring appliance hurt my jaw?

Some people experience temporary jaw stiffness or tooth soreness, especially at first. If discomfort persists, the dentist can adjust the appliance. People with existing jaw joint problems should mention them before any treatment or fitting begins.

How long does a snoring appliance last?

Many appliances last several years with good care, though wear and changes to your teeth can affect fit. The dentist checks the appliance at regular visits and will recommend repair or replacement when it is needed.
