Quieter nights, with care

Snoring can disturb sleep, and sometimes it signals something more.

Snoring happens when airflow causes the soft tissues in the throat to vibrate during sleep. It can disrupt your rest and that of anyone sharing the room. For some people, a custom oral appliance that gently positions the jaw forward can reduce snoring. However, snoring can also be a sign of sleep apnea.

If you are in Cultus and snoring is affecting your household, our Port Dover dentists can discuss whether an appliance might help. We will encourage medical screening for sleep apnea where appropriate and explain how an appliance works with your teeth and jaw, and what it can realistically achieve.

Screening first

Make sure snoring is not hiding a medical problem.

  • When snoring needs medical review

Loud snoring with pauses in breathing, gasping, choking, daytime sleepiness, morning headaches or high blood pressure can suggest obstructive sleep apnea. These symptoms should be discussed with your family doctor, who may arrange a sleep study. Treating snoring alone could mask a serious condition. A partner’s description of your breathing at night is often the most useful information you can bring to that appointment.

  • Talking with your physician

If your physician confirms you do not have sleep apnea, or recommends an oral appliance as part of treatment, the dentist can proceed. Share any sleep study results with the dental team. Coordinating with your physician helps ensure the appliance is a safe and suitable choice. It also means both clinicians understand the goal of treatment.

How it works

Moving the jaw forward can open the airway.

Positioning the jaw

Snoring appliances, often called mandibular advancement devices, hold the lower jaw slightly forward during sleep. This can tighten the soft tissues and increase airway space, reducing vibration. Custom appliances fit your teeth closely and can usually be adjusted for comfort and effectiveness. Reducing alcohol before bed and sleeping on your side may add to the benefit for some people.

Who may be a candidate

Candidates generally need healthy teeth and gums and no significant jaw joint problems. People with loose teeth, active gum disease or certain dental restorations may need treatment first. The dentist will examine your mouth and explain whether an appliance is likely to suit you. Jaw clicking or pain is worth mentioning before any appliance is made.

Getting fitted

The appliance is customized for your mouth.

  1. Records and design

The dentist takes impressions or scans of your teeth and records your bite. These are used to make an appliance in a laboratory. The design depends on your teeth, jaw movement and comfort. Ask about the type of appliance being recommended and how it is adjusted. Some designs allow more mouth movement than others during sleep.

  2. Fitting and adjustment

At the fitting visit, the dentist checks that the appliance fits securely and comfortably. You will learn how to insert, remove and clean it. The jaw position may be adjusted gradually over the following weeks. Ask your sleep partner to report whether snoring improves. A snoring app can also help track changes over the first few weeks.

Living with it

Expect a short period of adjustment.

Common side effects

Some people experience jaw soreness, tooth tenderness, excess saliva or a dry mouth at first. These often settle within a few weeks. If discomfort persists or your bite feels different in the morning, contact the dentist. Small adjustments can improve comfort. Gentle jaw stretches in the morning may help your bite feel normal again after removing the appliance.

Care and follow-up

Clean the appliance daily and store it in its case. Bring it to dental checkups so the dentist can check its condition and monitor your teeth and bite. If snoring returns or you develop new symptoms, talk with your physician and the dental team. New daytime tiredness should not be ignored, especially when driving long distances.

Snoring appliance questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Will a snoring appliance stop my snoring completely?

Many people notice reduced snoring, but results vary. Effectiveness depends on the cause of snoring and how well the appliance suits your mouth. Snoring from nasal blockage may need a different approach altogether, such as treatment from a physician.

Do I need a sleep study first?

If there are signs of sleep apnea, a medical assessment is recommended before using a snoring appliance. Your physician can determine whether a sleep study is needed. Many studies can now be done at home.

Are store-bought snoring devices effective?

Some people find them helpful, but they may fit poorly or cause discomfort. A custom appliance is designed for your teeth and can be adjusted by the dentist over time for better results and comfort.

Can a snoring appliance change my bite?

Some people notice bite changes over time. Regular checkups help the dentist monitor and manage these effects. Report changes you notice, such as front teeth meeting differently or a bite that feels off for most of the day.

How long does a snoring appliance last?

Lifespan depends on use and care. Many last several years. The dentist checks the appliance at visits and can advise when replacement is needed. New dental work may also require changes to the fit afterward.
