One plan, several steps

A smile makeover starts with a clear plan, not a single procedure.

A smile makeover is a coordinated plan that may combine several treatments, such as whitening, bonding, veneers, crowns, orthodontics, gum contouring or replacing missing teeth. Rather than fixing one tooth at a time, the dentist looks at how all your teeth, gums and lips work together, and plans changes that balance appearance, function and long-term health.

If you live in Vanessa and want a bigger change to your smile, a consultation at our Port Dover office is the place to begin. The dentist will listen to your goals, assess your oral health and outline realistic options, timelines and costs, so you can decide how far you would like to go.

Your goals

Clear goals help shape the plan.

Describing your ideal smile

Think about what bothers you most, such as colour, spacing, crowding, chips, worn edges, gummy smiles or missing teeth. Bring photos of your smile from different angles and examples of smiles you like. Share how much time you can give to treatment, your budget and whether there is an event you would like the work finished before.

Balancing goals and realities

Some goals can be reached with simpler treatments, while others need more time and cost. The dentist will explain what is realistic based on your teeth, gums, bite and facial features. They may suggest prioritizing certain changes or spreading treatment over time. Honest discussion helps you set expectations you can be happy with for years.

Assessment

A healthy mouth is the foundation for lasting results.

  • Oral health first

The dentist checks for decay, gum disease, bite problems and worn or failing restorations. These issues need attention before or alongside cosmetic work, since they can affect results and how long they last. X-rays, photos and measurements help the dentist understand your mouth and explain findings clearly to you, pointing to what they see on screen.

  • Records and previews

Digital scans, models or a temporary mock-up may be used to preview possible changes. Seeing a rough preview can help you decide whether the planned shape and size feel right. These tools are guides, and final results may differ slightly, but they help you and the dentist agree on direction before anything permanent is done.

Building the plan

The order of treatment matters.

  1. Ordering the steps

A makeover often follows a logical sequence: treating gum disease and decay first, then orthodontic movement if needed, then whitening, and finally bonding, veneers or crowns matched to the new shade. Some steps can overlap, while others must wait for healing or tooth movement. The dentist will explain the reasoning for each stage and its timing.

  2. Costs and timelines

You will receive a written plan with the recommended treatments, the number of visits, an estimated timeline and costs. Ask whether treatment can be staged to spread costs or fit around work and family. Check insurance coverage directly with your provider, since cosmetic treatments are often not covered or only partly covered by most plans.

After treatment

Good care helps your new smile last.

Caring for new restorations

Brush twice daily, clean between teeth and keep up regular cleanings to protect natural teeth and new restorations. Avoid biting hard objects, and wear a night guard if you grind. Limit staining drinks and tobacco to help maintain colour. Ask the dentist for specific care instructions for each type of restoration you have received as part of the plan.

Regular reviews

Regular checkups let the dentist monitor restorations, gum health and your bite. Veneers, bonding and crowns may need maintenance or replacement over time. Whitening may need touch-ups. If anything chips, loosens or feels different, call the office early, since prompt repairs are often simpler and less costly than waiting. Keep records of your treatment for future reference.

Smile makeover questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does a smile makeover take?

It varies widely. Simple makeovers may take a few visits, while plans involving orthodontics, implants or many restorations can take months. The dentist will give an estimated timeline once your plan is designed and update it if things change.

Do I have to do everything at once?

No. Many people stage treatment over time to spread costs or fit around life. The dentist can help prioritize the changes that matter most to you and plan the rest for later, in an order that still makes clinical sense.

Will my new smile look natural?

A well-planned makeover aims for results that suit your face, age and personality. Previews and mock-ups help you and the dentist agree on shape, size and shade before permanent changes are made, and you can ask for changes.

Is a smile makeover covered by insurance?

Cosmetic treatments are often not covered, though some parts of a plan, such as treating decay or gum disease, may be. Ask the office for a written estimate and check directly with your insurance provider.

What if I only want a few changes?

That is perfectly fine. The consultation is about your goals. The dentist can suggest targeted changes, such as whitening and bonding, rather than an extensive plan if that suits you better. You can always add more later.
