Obstructive sleep apnea happens when the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, interrupting breathing and disturbing rest. It is a medical condition that should be diagnosed by a physician, usually through a sleep study. For some people, a custom oral appliance that gently positions the lower jaw forward can help keep the airway more open during the night.
Windham Centre patients who have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, or who suspect they may have it, can talk with our Port Dover dentists about whether an oral appliance might be suitable. The dentist works alongside your physician, since medical diagnosis and follow-up remain essential parts of care.

Recognising signs
Loud, persistent snoring, pauses in breathing noticed by a partner, gasping or choking during sleep and frequent waking to use the washroom are common signs. Some people wake with a dry mouth or headache. Because these symptoms happen while you are asleep, a partner or family member is often the first to notice. Note what they observe and share it with your doctor.
Daytime tiredness, difficulty concentrating, irritability and falling asleep while reading or watching television can all be linked to poor sleep quality. Drowsiness while driving is a serious safety concern. If any of these sound familiar, speak with your family doctor about a sleep assessment, even before considering any dental appliance or any other form of treatment.
Diagnosis first
Only a physician can diagnose sleep apnea and determine its severity, typically through an overnight sleep study at home or in a clinic. Severity guides treatment choices. CPAP therapy is commonly recommended, especially for moderate to severe cases, while oral appliances may be an option for some people with milder apnea or those who cannot tolerate CPAP.
If your physician believes an oral appliance is appropriate, the dentist can assess whether your teeth, gums and jaw joints are suitable. Healthy teeth are needed to anchor the appliance, and jaw joint problems may affect comfort. The dentist and physician can share information, with your consent, so the plan suits both your medical and dental needs.
Getting an appliance
The dentist examines your teeth, gums, bite and jaw joints and may take X-rays. Impressions or digital scans are taken, and the dentist records how far your lower jaw can comfortably move forward. These records are used to make an appliance that fits snugly over your upper and lower teeth and holds the jaw in a carefully chosen position.
At the fitting appointment, the dentist checks comfort and fit and shows you how to insert, remove and clean the appliance. Adjustments are usually made gradually over several weeks to find a position that helps without causing discomfort. Your physician may recommend a follow-up sleep study to confirm how well the appliance is working for you.
Living with it
Some people notice jaw stiffness, tooth tenderness or extra saliva at first, which often settles as they adjust. Over time, appliances can cause small changes in how the teeth meet, so the dentist will monitor your bite. Report persistent jaw pain, loose teeth or sore gums. Clean the appliance daily and store it safely away from heat and pets.
Ongoing follow-up with both your dentist and your physician is important. Appliances can wear and may need adjustment or replacement. Weight changes, new medications or other health changes can affect sleep apnea severity. Keep your physician informed about how you are sleeping and feeling during the day, and attend any recommended follow-up sleep studies as scheduled.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to ask about oral appliance therapy. Windham Centre patients can mention whether they have had a sleep study and whether their physician has suggested a dental appliance as an option.
Bring any sleep study reports and physician notes, and mention jaw pain or clicking, as these can affect appliance suitability.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Sleep apnea must be diagnosed by a physician, usually through a sleep study. The dentist may notice signs that suggest a referral would be wise and can provide an oral appliance if your physician recommends one.
CPAP is often the first recommendation, especially for more severe sleep apnea. Oral appliances can be effective for some people, particularly with milder cases or those who cannot tolerate CPAP. Your physician can advise on the best option.
Over time, some people notice small changes in how their teeth meet. The dentist monitors your bite at regular visits and can suggest exercises or adjustments. Report any changes that bother you so they can be reviewed.
No. Many people snore without having sleep apnea. However, loud snoring combined with breathing pauses, gasping or daytime sleepiness should be discussed with your doctor, since a sleep study can clarify what is happening overnight.
Appliances wear with nightly use and may need adjustment or replacement after several years. Bring yours to dental visits so it can be checked for wear, cracks and fit, and replaced when it no longer works as intended.
Loud snoring can disrupt the whole household. Windham Centre patients can learn when a custom oral appliance may help and why medical screening comes first.
A custom night guard can cushion teeth from overnight grinding. See how Windham Centre patients are measured, fitted and followed up for one in Port Dover.
