Obstructive sleep apnea causes breathing to stop and start repeatedly during sleep, often because the airway narrows or collapses. It can lead to loud snoring, gasping, poor sleep and daytime fatigue, and is linked with other health concerns. Diagnosis requires a physician and usually a sleep study, not a dental exam alone.
For some people diagnosed with mild to moderate sleep apnea, or who cannot tolerate CPAP, a custom oral appliance may be an option. Walsh residents can discuss this at our Port Dover office, where the dentist can assess suitability and work alongside your physician on the plan.

Diagnosis first
Loud snoring, pauses in breathing noticed by a partner, waking with a choking or gasping feeling, morning headaches, excessive daytime sleepiness and difficulty concentrating are common signs. Falling asleep while reading or watching television, or feeling drowsy behind the wheel on long drives, are also worth taking seriously. The dentist may notice clues such as worn teeth during routine exams.
If sleep apnea is suspected, the dentist will suggest speaking with your family doctor, who can arrange a sleep study at home or in a clinic. A diagnosis and a severity rating guide which treatments make sense. Oral appliances are typically considered only once a physician has confirmed the diagnosis and discussed the full range of options with you.
Appliance options
A mandibular advancement device fits over the upper and lower teeth, much like a pair of sports guards joined together, and holds the lower jaw slightly forward during sleep. This can help keep the airway more open and reduce collapse. Devices are custom-made from your own teeth and can usually be adjusted gradually to find a position that is both effective and comfortable.
CPAP, a machine that gently pushes air through a mask, is often the first treatment recommended, especially for moderate to severe apnea. Some people find it difficult to use consistently and may consider an appliance instead or alongside it. Your physician and dentist can help you weigh the options based on your diagnosis, your comfort and your preferences.
Fitting
The dentist examines your teeth, gums and jaw joints to make sure an appliance is suitable and will not cause problems. Healthy teeth and gums are needed to hold the device securely. Impressions or scans and bite records are then taken so the appliance can be custom-made to fit your mouth and allow the jaw to be positioned precisely.
When the appliance is ready, the dentist checks its fit and comfort and teaches you how to put it in, take it out and care for it. Adjustments to the jaw position may be made gradually over several visits. Ask about scheduling these follow-ups from Walsh so they fit with your work and sleep routine without long gaps between them.
Follow-up
Your physician may recommend a follow-up sleep study to confirm the appliance is actually helping your breathing, not just your snoring. Report changes in snoring, sleep quality and daytime alertness to both the dentist and your doctor. If symptoms continue, the appliance may need further adjustment, or a different treatment may need to be considered instead.
Appliances can sometimes cause jaw soreness, tooth tenderness or gradual changes in your bite. The dentist monitors for these at regular visits and may suggest simple morning exercises. Clean the appliance daily as instructed and bring it to every checkup, so its fit, condition and effect on your teeth can be assessed over time and recorded.

No. Diagnosis requires a physician and usually a sleep study. A dentist may notice signs and suggest you speak with your doctor, and can provide an oral appliance once sleep apnea has been properly diagnosed and assessed.
They can help some people with mild to moderate sleep apnea, but results vary from person to person. Follow-up with your physician, sometimes including another sleep study, helps confirm whether the appliance is effective for you.
CPAP is often more effective for moderate to severe sleep apnea. Appliances may be easier for some people to tolerate night after night. Your physician and dentist can help you decide which approach suits your diagnosis.
Some people notice bite changes or jaw discomfort over time. The dentist monitors this at follow-up visits and can adjust the appliance or suggest exercises that help minimize these effects while keeping your treatment effective.
Rinse and gently brush it daily with cool water or a recommended cleaner, then store it dry in its case away from heat and pets. Avoid hot water. Bring it to dental visits so its condition and fit can be checked regularly.
Loud snoring can disrupt the whole household. Walsh residents can learn how custom snoring appliances work and why sleep apnea should be ruled out first.
