Obstructive sleep apnea happens when the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, interrupting breathing. Loud snoring, gasping, daytime fatigue and morning headaches are common signs. Diagnosis is made by a physician, usually after a sleep study. For some people with mild to moderate sleep apnea, a custom oral appliance may be recommended as a treatment option.
If you live in Vittoria and have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, or suspect you might have it, the dentist at our Port Dover office can discuss whether an oral appliance could be suitable. The dentist will work alongside your physician, since diagnosis and overall management of sleep apnea belong in medical care.

Recognize the signs
Loud, frequent snoring, pauses in breathing noticed by a partner, choking or gasping during sleep and waking frequently are common signs. Some people wake with a dry mouth or sore throat. Teeth grinding is sometimes associated with sleep breathing problems. If you notice these signs, discuss them with your physician. A partner’s observations are often the first clue.
Daytime tiredness, difficulty concentrating, morning headaches, irritability and falling asleep easily during quiet activities can indicate poor-quality sleep. Untreated sleep apnea has been linked to other health problems, so it deserves medical attention. The dentist may notice signs during an exam and suggest a medical evaluation. Drowsy driving is a particular safety concern, so mention it if you ever struggle to stay alert behind the wheel.
Medical diagnosis
Sleep apnea must be diagnosed by a physician, who will consider your symptoms, health history and test results. They will also discuss treatment options, which may include CPAP, lifestyle changes, oral appliances or other approaches. The dentist does not diagnose sleep apnea but can provide an appliance when it is recommended. Both providers keep each other informed.
A sleep study measures breathing, oxygen levels and other factors during sleep. It may be done in a sleep clinic or at home. Results help determine the severity of sleep apnea and which treatments are suitable. Bring your sleep study results and your physician’s recommendations to the dental consultation. Copies can usually be requested from the clinic that did the study.
Oral appliances
Mandibular advancement devices hold the lower jaw slightly forward during sleep, which can help prevent the airway from collapsing. They are custom-made from impressions or scans of your teeth. The dentist will check that your teeth, gums and jaw joints are healthy enough to support the appliance before proceeding. Loose teeth or gum disease may need attention first.
After the appliance is made, the dentist fits it and shows you how to use it. Adjustments are often made over several visits to find the most effective and comfortable position. A follow-up sleep study may be recommended by your physician to confirm whether the appliance is working as intended. Keep both the dental and medical follow-up appointments.
Living with it
Some people experience jaw soreness, tooth discomfort, excess saliva or changes in their bite, especially at first. Many of these effects lessen over time. Report persistent discomfort to the dentist, as adjustments may help. Morning exercises may be recommended to help the jaw settle into its normal position. Please do not adjust the device yourself.
Regular dental visits allow the dentist to check the appliance, your teeth and jaw. Your physician should also continue to monitor your sleep apnea. If symptoms return, such as snoring or daytime fatigue, let both providers know. Appliances wear over time and may need replacement. Weight changes or new dental work can also affect how well it fits and works.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to discuss an oral appliance and let the team know whether you have a diagnosis. Ask what information from your physician or sleep study would be helpful to bring.
Bring sleep study results, your physician’s recommendations and a medication list. Mention any jaw pain or dental work you have had. Bring a CPAP history if relevant.

No. Sleep apnea is diagnosed by a physician, usually after a sleep study. The dentist may notice signs and suggest you seek a medical evaluation, and can provide an oral appliance if it is recommended.
CPAP is often the first-line treatment for moderate to severe sleep apnea. Oral appliances may be suitable for some people with mild to moderate cases or those who cannot tolerate CPAP. Your physician will advise on the best option.
Many people find snoring decreases with an appliance, but stopping snoring does not necessarily mean sleep apnea is fully treated. Follow-up with your physician helps confirm effectiveness. A repeat sleep study may be suggested to measure how well the appliance is controlling your breathing.
Some people experience jaw soreness, tooth discomfort or bite changes. These often improve with time and adjustments. Report persistent side effects to the dentist so the appliance can be checked. Morning jaw exercises may ease stiffness.
Appliances wear over time and may need replacement after several years. Regular dental checkups help monitor wear and fit. Bring the appliance to each visit, and let the office know if it cracks, loosens or stops feeling effective.
