Caring for Villa Nova patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Villa NovaWorking with your physician
Obstructive sleep apnea is a medical condition in which the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, interrupting breathing. Diagnosis requires a sleep study arranged through a physician. For some patients, particularly those with mild to moderate apnea or who cannot tolerate CPAP, a custom oral appliance that positions the lower jaw forward may be considered as part of treatment.
Villa Nova patients with a sleep apnea diagnosis can discuss oral appliance therapy at our Port Dover office. The dentist will work in coordination with your physician, since the condition needs ongoing medical oversight.

Diagnosis first
Loud snoring, gasping or choking during sleep, waking unrefreshed and daytime sleepiness can suggest sleep apnea, but only a sleep study can confirm it and measure its severity. If you have these symptoms and no diagnosis, speak with your family doctor about a referral before considering an oral appliance.
Untreated sleep apnea is associated with other health risks, so medical assessment is important. If a dentist notices signs such as heavy grinding, a scalloped tongue or a narrow airway, they may suggest discussing sleep with your physician, but they will not diagnose the condition themselves.
Is an appliance suitable
Oral appliances are often considered for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, or for patients who cannot use CPAP. The decision is usually made together with your physician or sleep specialist. Bring your sleep study report and any recommendations they have made.
You need enough healthy teeth to anchor the appliance, healthy gums and jaw joints that can tolerate forward positioning. The dentist will examine your teeth, gums, bite and jaw function and may take records. Existing jaw pain or significant dental problems may need attention first.
Fitting
Impressions or scans of your teeth and a record of your bite are taken. The appliance is made to hold your lower jaw in a slightly forward position during sleep. Let the team know about any gag reflex or jaw discomfort during the process.
At delivery, the fit is checked and you are shown how to insert, remove and clean the appliance. It is often adjusted gradually over several visits to find a position that is both effective and comfortable. Follow-up with your physician, often including a repeat sleep study, helps confirm effectiveness.
Ongoing care
Some people experience jaw soreness, tooth tenderness, excess saliva or dry mouth at first. Over time, the bite may change slightly. Report persistent discomfort or bite changes to the dentist so the appliance can be adjusted or alternatives considered.
Bring the appliance to dental checkups so the fit and condition can be assessed. Keep follow-up appointments with your physician as well. If symptoms like snoring or daytime sleepiness return, let both your dentist and doctor know.
