Obstructive sleep apnea happens when the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, interrupting breathing. Signs include loud snoring, gasping or choking at night, morning headaches and daytime sleepiness. Diagnosis requires a sleep study arranged through a physician. For some people, a custom oral appliance made by a dentist can help keep the airway more open.
If you live near Vanessa and have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, or your physician has suggested an oral appliance, our Port Dover office can assess whether one may suit you. The dentist works alongside your physician, since appliance therapy is one possible option among several medical treatments.

Diagnosis first
Loud, frequent snoring, pauses in breathing noticed by a partner, gasping awake, morning headaches, dry mouth on waking, poor concentration and daytime sleepiness can all be signs of sleep apnea. Feeling tired while driving is a serious concern. If you notice these signs, speak with your physician, who can arrange appropriate testing and explain what the results mean.
A sleep study measures breathing, oxygen levels and other factors during sleep to diagnose sleep apnea and judge its severity. A dentist cannot diagnose sleep apnea. The diagnosis and severity help your physician decide whether a CPAP machine, an oral appliance, lifestyle changes or other treatments are most appropriate for you, and whether a dental appliance is worth exploring.
Oral appliances
Most oral appliances for sleep apnea work by holding the lower jaw slightly forward during sleep, which can help keep the tongue and soft tissues from blocking the airway. They look somewhat like a mouthguard and are made from impressions or scans of your teeth. Adjustable designs allow the position to be fine-tuned gradually over several weeks.
Oral appliances are often considered for people with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, or for those who cannot tolerate CPAP. They require healthy teeth and gums to anchor the appliance. The dentist will check your teeth, jaw joints and bite to see whether an appliance is suitable and explain the potential benefits and limitations.
Fitting and adjusting
The dentist reviews your sleep study results and medical history, examines your teeth, gums and jaw, and may take X-rays. Impressions or scans are taken so the appliance can be custom-made. The dentist explains how the appliance works, how to wear and clean it and what side effects to watch for during the first weeks.
At the fitting, the dentist checks comfort and adjusts the jaw position as needed. You may return several times for gradual adjustments. Your physician may arrange a follow-up sleep study to confirm the appliance is improving your breathing. Ongoing communication between the dentist and physician helps make sure treatment is working as intended over time.
Living with it
Some people notice jaw stiffness, tooth soreness, excess saliva or a change in their bite in the morning, especially at first. These often settle, and the dentist may suggest exercises or adjustments. Clean the appliance daily as instructed and store it safely. Report persistent discomfort or bite changes to the office promptly rather than stopping use on your own.
Regular dental visits allow the dentist to check the appliance, your teeth, gums and bite, and make adjustments over time. Keep up follow-up with your physician as well, since sleep apnea needs ongoing medical monitoring. If symptoms such as snoring or daytime sleepiness return, contact both your dentist and physician so the plan can be reviewed together.
Planning your appointment
If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, call our Port Dover office to discuss whether an oral appliance may suit you. Bring your sleep study results and any referral notes from your physician.
Let the team know about any jaw pain, dental work or loose teeth, since these can affect whether an appliance is appropriate.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Sleep apnea must be diagnosed through a sleep study arranged by a physician. A dentist may notice signs such as grinding or a large tongue and suggest you speak with your doctor, but cannot make the diagnosis.
CPAP is often the first-line treatment, especially for severe sleep apnea. Oral appliances can be effective for some people with mild to moderate apnea or those who cannot use CPAP. Your physician and dentist will help decide.
Some people notice bite changes over time, especially with long-term use. The dentist monitors your bite at regular visits and may suggest morning jaw exercises or appliance adjustments to minimize changes. Report any shift you notice between visits.
Some appliances treat both snoring and sleep apnea, but snoring alone does not mean you have sleep apnea. A medical evaluation is important before using an appliance to treat suspected apnea, so a serious condition is not missed.
Rinse and gently brush it each morning with cool water and mild soap, then let it dry and store it in its case. The dentist will give specific cleaning instructions for your appliance and its material.
A custom oral appliance may reduce snoring for some people. Vanessa patients can learn how these appliances work and why a medical check comes first.
A custom night guard can shield teeth from grinding while you sleep. Vanessa patients can learn about fitting, comfort and care through our Port Dover office.
