Obstructive sleep apnea causes repeated pauses in breathing during sleep, often with loud snoring, gasping and daytime fatigue. It is a medical condition that needs diagnosis by a physician, usually through a sleep study. For some people, a custom oral appliance that positions the lower jaw forward can help keep the airway open.
If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, or suspect it, Turkey Point patients can discuss oral appliance options at our Port Dover office. The dentist will work alongside your physician rather than replacing medical care.

Diagnosis first
Loud snoring, pauses in breathing noticed by a partner, waking up gasping, morning headaches, excessive daytime sleepiness and difficulty concentrating are common signs. High blood pressure and other health conditions can be associated. If you notice these symptoms, speak with your doctor, who can arrange a sleep assessment.
Sleep apnea ranges from mild to severe and can affect overall health. A sleep study determines severity and guides treatment. Options include CPAP machines, oral appliances, lifestyle changes and sometimes surgery. Your physician decides whether an oral appliance is an appropriate option for your diagnosis.
Is an appliance suitable
Oral appliances are often considered for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, or for people who cannot tolerate CPAP. They may be more convenient for travel, including trips between home and a cottage. Your physician and dentist will discuss whether an appliance is likely to be effective in your case.
You need enough healthy teeth to support the appliance, and your jaw joints should be able to tolerate the forward position. Gum disease, loose teeth or jaw problems may need attention first. The dentist will examine your teeth, gums, bite and jaw before recommending an appliance.
Fitting the appliance
The dentist takes impressions or scans of your teeth and records your bite in a forward jaw position. These are used to fabricate a custom appliance. The dentist may coordinate with your physician to confirm the diagnosis and treatment goals before proceeding.
When the appliance is ready, the dentist checks fit and comfort and shows you how to wear and clean it. The jaw position is usually adjusted gradually over several visits to balance effectiveness and comfort. Your physician may recommend a follow-up sleep study to confirm the appliance is working.
Ongoing care
Wear the appliance every night as directed. Some people experience temporary jaw soreness, excess saliva or a changed bite feeling in the morning, which often settles. Clean the appliance daily and store it safely. Report persistent jaw pain, tooth discomfort or changes in your bite.
The dentist monitors your teeth, bite and the appliance at regular visits. Your physician monitors sleep apnea symptoms and overall health. Let both know if snoring returns, daytime sleepiness increases or your health changes. Seasonal residents should keep both providers informed when moving between homes.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to ask about oral appliances for sleep apnea. Let the team know whether you have a diagnosis and the name of the physician managing your care.
Bring your sleep study results if available and any current CPAP or appliance information. A list of medications is also useful.
