Caring for Townsend patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for TownsendDental support for better sleep
Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, interrupting breathing. Signs include loud snoring, gasping, waking unrefreshed and daytime tiredness. Diagnosis requires a sleep study arranged through a physician. For some people, a custom oral appliance worn at night can help keep the airway more open.
If you live in Townsend and have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, or suspect you might have it, our Port Dover office can discuss how oral appliance therapy fits with medical care. The dentist will work alongside your physician’s recommendations and explain whether an appliance is likely to be suitable.

Get a diagnosis
Loud, frequent snoring, pauses in breathing that a partner notices, choking or gasping during the night, morning headaches, a dry mouth on waking, heavy daytime sleepiness and trouble concentrating can all suggest sleep apnea. It is sometimes linked with high blood pressure and other health conditions. If several of these sound familiar, raise them with your family doctor rather than waiting.
A sleep study measures breathing, oxygen levels and sleep patterns overnight to confirm whether sleep apnea is present and how severe it is. That result guides which treatments are appropriate. An oral appliance should not be used to treat suspected sleep apnea before a medical diagnosis, because severity makes a real difference to which approach is safe and likely to work.
Treatment options
CPAP, a machine that delivers gentle air pressure through a mask, is a common and effective treatment for sleep apnea. Weight management, sleeping position changes, treating nasal congestion and, for some people, surgery may also be recommended. Your physician will advise which approach is best based on the sleep study and your overall health, and may combine more than one.
Oral appliances fit over the upper and lower teeth and hold the lower jaw slightly forward while you sleep, which can help stop the airway from collapsing. They may be considered for mild to moderate sleep apnea, or for people who have genuinely struggled to use CPAP, when a physician has recommended this approach as part of the treatment plan.
Fitting an appliance
The dentist will examine your teeth, gums and jaw joints to make sure an appliance is a reasonable option. The teeth need to be healthy and stable enough to hold it, and existing jaw pain needs to be considered carefully. Impressions or scans are taken, along with records of your bite and how far your lower jaw can comfortably move forward.
At the fitting appointment, the dentist checks comfort and fit and explains how to wear and clean the appliance. Its position is usually advanced in small steps over several visits to find the most effective setting without straining the jaw. Your physician may arrange a follow-up sleep study to confirm how well the appliance is controlling your breathing.
Ongoing care
Some people notice jaw soreness, tender teeth, extra saliva or a bite that feels slightly different in the morning, particularly in the first weeks. Most of these effects are mild and settle, but report them so the dentist can adjust the appliance or suggest jaw exercises. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor your teeth, bite and the condition of the appliance.
Keep your physician informed about your treatment and any change in symptoms, such as snoring returning or daytime tiredness creeping back. Weight changes, new medications and other health conditions can affect sleep apnea over time. Ongoing communication between you, your doctor and the dental team helps make sure the treatment stays appropriate for you.

A dentist may notice signs, such as worn teeth or a narrow airway, and suggest you speak with your doctor, but diagnosis requires a sleep study arranged through a physician. Oral appliances are considered only once a diagnosis confirms the condition and its severity.
CPAP is often very effective, but some people find it hard to use every night. Oral appliances may work well for mild to moderate sleep apnea. Effectiveness varies from person to person, so follow-up testing is often recommended to confirm results.
Some people notice gradual bite changes with long-term use. The dentist monitors this at regular visits and may suggest morning exercises or adjustments. Report any persistent change in how your teeth fit together so it can be assessed early.
Store-bought devices are not designed or monitored for treating sleep apnea and may not be appropriate or safe for that purpose. A custom appliance fitted and adjusted by a dentist, as part of medical care, is generally the recommended route.
Many people adapt within a few weeks, though it varies. Early jaw soreness or extra saliva usually improves with regular use. The appliance is adjusted gradually to find a position that is both comfortable and effective for your breathing.
A custom oral appliance may reduce snoring for some people. Learn why ruling out sleep apnea matters and how fitting and follow-up work for Townsend patients.
A custom night guard is shaped to your bite to protect teeth from grinding. Townsend patients can learn how fitting works and how to care for the guard.
