Obstructive sleep apnea causes repeated pauses or reductions in breathing during sleep, often with loud snoring, gasping and daytime fatigue. It is a medical condition that should be diagnosed by a physician, usually with a sleep study. For some people, an oral appliance that repositions the lower jaw can help keep the airway more open during sleep.
Residents of Renton who have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, or who have been told an oral appliance might help, can discuss this at our Port Dover office. The dentist will review your diagnosis, examine your teeth and jaw and explain whether an appliance is suitable, how it is fitted and how follow-up with your physician works.

Diagnosis first
Loud snoring, pauses in breathing noticed by a partner, waking up gasping, morning headaches, excessive daytime sleepiness and difficulty concentrating are common signs. High blood pressure and other health conditions may also be linked. If you notice these, speak with your family doctor, who may refer you for a sleep study to confirm the diagnosis.
A physician determines whether sleep apnea is present and how severe it is. Treatment options may include continuous positive airway pressure, lifestyle changes, positional therapy or an oral appliance. Oral appliances are generally considered for mild to moderate cases or for people who cannot tolerate other treatments. The physician and dentist work together on the plan.
Dental evaluation
An oral appliance relies on healthy teeth and gums for anchorage. The dentist examines teeth for decay, loose teeth and gum disease, which may need treatment first. Enough natural teeth are usually needed to hold the device in place. People with full dentures may have limited options, which the dentist will explain in detail. Ask openly.
The jaw joints and muscles are assessed for pain, clicking or limited movement, since the appliance moves the lower jaw forward. Pre-existing jaw problems may affect suitability. The dentist will also note your bite, because appliances can sometimes cause bite changes over time. These factors help determine whether an appliance is a reasonable choice for you.
Fitting the appliance
Impressions or scans of your teeth and a record of your jaw position are used to create a custom appliance. At the fitting visit, the dentist checks comfort and shows you how to insert, remove and clean it. The appliance is usually set at a starting position and advanced gradually as you adapt over time.
In the first weeks, you may notice jaw soreness, tooth tenderness, excess saliva or dry mouth. These often improve with time. Follow-up appointments allow the dentist to adjust the appliance. Your physician may recommend a follow-up sleep study to confirm that the appliance is effectively improving your breathing during sleep. Feeling better is encouraging but not proof.
Long-term care
Clean the appliance daily with a soft brush and cool water or a recommended cleaner, then store it in its case. Bring it to dental checkups so the fit and condition can be checked. Wear and tear over time may require repairs or replacement. Keep the appliance away from heat and pets at all times.
Long-term use can sometimes cause changes in bite or jaw comfort. Regular dental visits allow these to be monitored. Continue follow-up with your physician, as weight changes, health changes or worsening symptoms may affect treatment. For Renton patients, scheduling follow-up appointments in advance helps keep both dental and medical monitoring on track together. Ask how.
Planning your appointment
If your physician has diagnosed sleep apnea and suggested an oral appliance, phone our Port Dover office at 519-583-2929. Bring your sleep study results and referral so the dentist can review them.
If you have not been diagnosed but suspect sleep apnea, talk with your family doctor first, as a medical assessment is needed before treatment.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Sleep apnea is diagnosed by a physician, usually with a sleep study. A dentist may notice signs and suggest you speak with your doctor. Once a diagnosis is made, the dentist can help with an oral appliance if it is appropriate.
Most oral appliances gently move the lower jaw forward, which can help keep the airway more open during sleep. Their effectiveness varies, so follow-up with your physician is important to confirm the appliance is improving your breathing.
CPAP is often considered the primary treatment for moderate to severe sleep apnea. Oral appliances may suit mild to moderate cases or people who cannot tolerate CPAP. Your physician and dentist can discuss which option suits your situation.
Some people notice bite changes with long-term use. The dentist monitors this at regular visits. Morning exercises or adjustments may be recommended. Report any persistent jaw pain or changes in how your teeth meet promptly.
Many people adapt within a few weeks, though some take longer. Initial jaw or tooth soreness and changes in saliva are common. Follow-up visits allow the dentist to make adjustments that improve comfort and effectiveness.
A custom oral appliance can reduce snoring for some people once sleep apnea has been ruled out. Renton patients can learn about suitability and fitting.
A custom night guard is shaped to your bite to cushion grinding forces. Renton patients can learn about fittings, comfort and care at our Port Dover office.
