Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, interrupting breathing. Signs include loud snoring, gasping, daytime sleepiness and morning headaches. Diagnosis requires a medical sleep assessment. For some people with mild to moderate apnea, or those who cannot tolerate CPAP, a custom oral appliance prescribed by a physician may be an option.
If you are in Normandale and have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, our Port Dover team can discuss whether an oral appliance might suit you. We work alongside your physician and do not replace medical diagnosis or follow-up.

Diagnosis first
Sleep apnea varies in severity, and the right treatment depends on the type and degree of obstruction. A sleep study, arranged through your physician, measures breathing, oxygen levels and sleep patterns. Dental appliances are generally considered after a diagnosis has been made, not as a substitute for one.
Loud snoring, pauses in breathing noticed by a partner, waking up gasping, excessive daytime tiredness, morning headaches and difficulty concentrating are reasons to speak with your doctor. The dentist may notice signs such as tooth wear or a large tongue and suggest a medical assessment.
Oral appliances
A mandibular advancement device fits over the upper and lower teeth and gently holds the lower jaw forward during sleep. This can help keep the airway from collapsing. The appliance is custom-made and adjustable, allowing the dentist to fine-tune the position over time.
Oral appliances may be recommended for people with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, or for those who cannot use CPAP. Suitability depends on the health of your teeth, gums and jaw joints. The dentist will examine these and discuss findings with you and your physician.
Fitting process
The dentist examines your teeth, gums and jaw joints and takes impressions or scans. X-rays may be needed. Existing dental problems are usually addressed before the appliance is made. The dentist will explain how the device works and what to expect when you start wearing it.
When the appliance is ready, the dentist fits it and shows you how to use it. Adjustments are made gradually over several visits to find a comfortable and effective position. Your physician may recommend a follow-up sleep study to assess how well the appliance is working.
Living with it
Some people experience jaw soreness, tooth tenderness, excess saliva or dry mouth when starting. These often settle. Over time, appliances can cause changes in the bite, so the dentist monitors this. Report persistent jaw pain or changes in how your teeth fit together.
Clean the appliance daily as instructed and store it in its case. Bring it to dental visits so the fit and condition can be checked. Continue seeing your physician for sleep apnea follow-up, since symptoms and treatment needs can change over time.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office after you have a sleep apnea diagnosis. Let us know who your physician is and bring a copy of your sleep study results if available.
If you have tried CPAP, share your experience so the dentist understands your treatment history.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Sleep apnea is diagnosed by a physician, usually after a sleep study. The dentist may notice signs and suggest you speak with your doctor.
CPAP is often the first-line treatment, but appliances may be effective for some people with mild to moderate apnea. Your physician and dentist can discuss which suits you.
Long-term use can cause bite changes in some people. Regular dental follow-up helps monitor and manage these effects.
Many people adjust within a few weeks. Jaw soreness or excess saliva usually improves. Contact the office if discomfort persists.
Your physician may recommend one to confirm the appliance is working effectively. Follow your doctor’s guidance on ongoing monitoring.
