Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, interrupting breathing. Signs include loud snoring, gasping, morning headaches and daytime sleepiness. Diagnosis requires a sleep study arranged through a physician. For some patients with a confirmed diagnosis, a custom oral appliance made by a dentist may be part of the treatment plan.
If you live in Nixon and have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, or your physician has suggested an oral appliance, you can discuss options at our Port Dover office. The dentist will examine your teeth and jaw, explain how appliances work and coordinate with your physician as needed.

Recognizing signs
A partner may notice loud, frequent snoring, pauses in breathing, choking or gasping during sleep. You might wake often, need to use the bathroom at night or feel restless. Some people grind their teeth at night. Because these signs happen during sleep, the person with sleep apnea is often the last to know, so input from others matters.
Morning headaches, dry mouth on waking, feeling unrefreshed, daytime sleepiness, difficulty concentrating or irritability may also be signs. Falling asleep while driving or at work is a serious warning. If you notice these symptoms, speak with your physician, who can arrange a sleep assessment and determine whether sleep apnea or another condition is involved. Do not drive when you feel drowsy.
Diagnosis first
Sleep apnea is diagnosed through a sleep study, which a physician arranges. The study measures breathing, oxygen levels and sleep patterns. The severity of sleep apnea and your overall health guide treatment options, which may include positional changes, weight management, a CPAP machine, an oral appliance or other approaches. A dentist cannot diagnose sleep apnea.
During a dental exam, the dentist may notice signs such as worn teeth from grinding, a scalloped tongue or a narrow airway. If these signs, along with snoring or fatigue, suggest a sleep problem, the dentist may encourage you to talk with your physician. Sharing your sleep history with both providers helps coordinate your care.
Oral appliances
Oral appliances for sleep apnea are usually designed to hold the lower jaw slightly forward, which can help keep the airway more open. They are custom made to fit your teeth and are adjustable. Appliances may be recommended for mild to moderate sleep apnea or for people who cannot tolerate CPAP, based on the physician’s assessment.
The dentist examines your teeth, gums and jaw joints to confirm an appliance is suitable. Impressions or scans are taken, and the appliance is made to fit your bite. At the fitting, the dentist checks comfort and explains how to wear and adjust it. Several visits may be needed to find the most effective position for you.
Follow-up
After you begin using an appliance, your physician may arrange a follow-up sleep study to confirm it is helping. The dentist may adjust the appliance gradually. Let both providers know how you are sleeping and whether symptoms have improved. Treatment is most effective when your physician and dentist are working together and sharing information about your progress.
Oral appliances can sometimes cause jaw discomfort, tooth tenderness or changes in your bite. Report these to the dentist, who can make adjustments or suggest exercises. Bring the appliance to checkups so it can be inspected for wear. Over time, it may need replacement to keep working effectively and comfortably night after night, so plan for periodic review.
Planning your appointment
If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea or your physician has recommended an oral appliance, call our Port Dover office. Share your diagnosis and physician details so care can be coordinated before fitting.
Bring a copy of your sleep study results, a list of medications and any previous appliances you have tried at home.

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Sleep apnea is diagnosed by a physician, usually through a sleep study. A dentist may notice signs that suggest a sleep problem and encourage you to seek medical assessment, then help with treatment such as an oral appliance if recommended.
Effectiveness varies by person and severity. Oral appliances can help many people with mild to moderate sleep apnea or those who cannot tolerate CPAP. Your physician and dentist will help determine the most appropriate option for you.
Some people notice changes in their bite or jaw over time. The dentist will monitor your teeth and jaw at follow-up visits and may suggest adjustments or exercises to reduce these effects while keeping the appliance effective.
No. Many people snore without having sleep apnea. However, loud snoring with gasping, pauses in breathing or daytime fatigue should be discussed with a physician, who can decide whether a sleep assessment is needed for you.
Lifespan depends on the material, how often it is used and how it is cared for. Regular dental checkups help monitor wear and fit. The dentist will advise when an adjustment or replacement may be needed.
Snoring can disrupt sleep for the whole household. Nixon patients can learn how a custom oral appliance may help and why a medical check comes first.
