Caring for Lynedoch patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Lynedoch patientsWorking with your physician
Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, interrupting breathing. It can cause loud snoring, gasping, daytime fatigue and other health effects. Diagnosis requires a sleep study arranged through a physician. For some people, a custom oral appliance that gently positions the lower jaw forward can help keep the airway more open.
Lynedoch patients who have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, or whose physician has suggested an oral appliance, can discuss this option at our Port Dover office. The dentist will assess your teeth and jaw and coordinate with your physician on whether an appliance is suitable.

Diagnosis first
Snoring alone does not confirm sleep apnea. A sleep study, arranged through your physician, measures breathing, oxygen levels and sleep patterns to determine whether apnea is present and how severe it is. This information guides treatment decisions and helps ensure the right approach is chosen.
Oral appliances are often considered for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea or for people who cannot tolerate CPAP. Your physician will advise on the most suitable treatment. The dentist works alongside your physician to fit and adjust the appliance if it is recommended.
Dental assessment
The dentist examines your teeth and gums to make sure they are healthy enough to hold an appliance. Enough teeth are needed for retention. Jaw joint health is assessed, since moving the lower jaw forward can affect the joints. Mention any jaw pain, clicking or limited opening.
Crowns, bridges, implants and planned dental work are considered when designing the appliance. Gum disease or decay should be treated first. The dentist will explain any dental treatment that may be recommended before an appliance can be fitted.
Fitting the appliance
Impressions or scans of your teeth and a bite record are taken to fabricate the appliance. When it is ready, the dentist checks fit and comfort and explains how to insert, remove and clean it. The starting position may be adjusted gradually to find an effective and comfortable setting.
Your physician may recommend a follow-up sleep study to check how well the appliance is working. Keep the dentist and physician informed about how you are sleeping and feeling. Adjustments may be needed to improve effectiveness or comfort over the first weeks and months.
Living with it
Some people notice jaw stiffness, tooth discomfort, excess saliva or dry mouth, particularly at first. These often ease but should be reported if they persist. Over time, appliances can cause changes in bite. The dentist will monitor for these effects at regular visits.
Clean the appliance daily as instructed and store it safely. Bring it to dental checkups so its condition and fit can be checked. Continue regular follow-up with your physician as well, since sleep apnea management involves both medical and dental care working together.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office and mention your sleep apnea diagnosis or physician referral. Ask what records the dentist will need before your first appointment.
Bring your sleep study results, physician’s notes and a list of medications if they are available.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Diagnosis requires a sleep study arranged through a physician. A dentist may notice signs and suggest you speak with your doctor, and can provide appliances when recommended.
Effectiveness varies by person and severity. CPAP is often recommended for more severe cases. Oral appliances may help some people, particularly with mild to moderate apnea. Your physician will advise.
Some people experience bite changes over time. The dentist will monitor for this at regular visits and may suggest exercises or adjustments to reduce the effect.
Improved sleep and reduced symptoms are helpful signs, but a follow-up sleep study ordered by your physician is often needed to confirm effectiveness.
Store-bought devices are not designed to treat sleep apnea and may not fit properly. Speak with your physician and dentist before using any device for diagnosed apnea.
