Obstructive sleep apnea causes repeated pauses in breathing during sleep, often with loud snoring, gasping and daytime fatigue. It is a medical condition that should be diagnosed by a physician, usually with a sleep study. For some people, an oral appliance that positions the lower jaw forward can help keep the airway open.
If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea and live in La Salette, the dentist at our Port Dover office can assess whether an oral appliance may be suitable. Treatment is coordinated with your physician, who continues to manage your overall sleep health.

Diagnosis first
Sleep apnea can affect heart health, blood pressure, mood and safety on the road. A physician and sleep study determine whether you have it and how severe it is. The dentist does not diagnose sleep apnea but can work with your physician once a diagnosis is made.
Loud snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, choking or gasping at night, morning headaches and excessive daytime sleepiness are common signs. If the dentist notices signs like a narrow airway or teeth grinding, they may suggest you speak with your physician.
Is an appliance suitable
Oral appliances are often considered for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, or for people who cannot tolerate CPAP. Your physician will help determine whether an appliance is a reasonable option based on your sleep study results and overall health.
You need enough healthy teeth to hold the appliance, healthy gums and a jaw that can move forward comfortably. The dentist will examine your teeth, gums, jaw joints and bite. Existing jaw problems may affect suitability and will be discussed.
Fitting and adjusting
The dentist takes impressions or scans of your teeth and records your jaw position. The appliance is custom-made and fitted at a follow-up visit. You will learn how to insert, remove and clean it. Initial settings are usually conservative.
Over several weeks, the appliance may be gradually adjusted to move the jaw forward. Your physician may recommend a follow-up sleep study to check how well it is working. Communication between the dentist and physician helps ensure the treatment is effective.
Long-term use
Some people experience jaw soreness, tooth tenderness, excess saliva or dry mouth, especially at first. These often improve. Over time, appliances can cause changes in bite, so regular checkups help monitor this. Report persistent discomfort or bite changes promptly.
Clean the appliance daily and store it properly. Bring it to dental appointments so its fit and condition can be checked. Continue seeing your physician for sleep apnea follow-up. Weight changes, new symptoms or other health changes may affect your treatment needs.
Planning your appointment
If you have a sleep apnea diagnosis, book a consultation at our Port Dover office. Bring your sleep study results and your physician’s contact information.
If you have not been diagnosed but suspect sleep apnea, speak with your physician first about a sleep evaluation.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Sleep apnea is diagnosed by a physician, usually with a sleep study. The dentist can notice possible signs and work with your physician on oral appliance treatment after diagnosis.
CPAP is often more effective for severe sleep apnea, but some people do well with oral appliances, especially for mild to moderate cases. Your physician will help determine the best approach.
Long-term use can cause bite changes in some people. Regular dental checkups help monitor this. The dentist may suggest exercises or adjustments to reduce the effect.
Some soreness or tenderness is common at first and often improves. Report persistent discomfort so the dentist can adjust the appliance or address concerns.
Your physician may recommend a follow-up sleep study. Improvements in snoring, energy and sleep quality are also helpful signs, but testing confirms effectiveness.
A custom oral appliance may reduce snoring for some adults. La Salette patients can learn why sleep apnea should be ruled out first and how fitting works.
A custom night guard can protect teeth from overnight clenching. La Salette patients can see how fit is checked in Port Dover and how to clean and store it.
