Every dental service for Jarvis patientsTeamwork with your physician
Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, interrupting breathing. Loud snoring, gasping, morning headaches and daytime fatigue are common signs. Diagnosis requires a sleep study arranged through a physician. For some diagnosed patients, a custom oral appliance that positions the lower jaw forward may be an option.
Jarvis patients who have a sleep apnea diagnosis, or who suspect one, can raise it at our Port Dover office. The dentist can explain how dental appliances fit into care and when to speak with your doctor first.

Recognizing it
Loud, frequent snoring, pauses in breathing noticed by a partner, choking or gasping during sleep, waking unrefreshed, morning headaches, daytime sleepiness and difficulty concentrating can all suggest sleep apnea. High blood pressure and certain other health conditions are associated with it as well.
Sleep apnea is a medical condition that can affect overall health. A physician can arrange a sleep study to confirm the diagnosis and its severity. Using a dental appliance without a diagnosis may mask symptoms without addressing the problem adequately. If you have symptoms, start with your doctor.
Treatment options
Continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, is a common treatment that uses a mask to keep the airway open. Lifestyle changes, positional therapy and, in some cases, surgery may also be considered. Your physician or sleep specialist will recommend options based on the severity of the condition.
For some patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea, or those who cannot tolerate CPAP, a custom oral appliance may be recommended. It holds the lower jaw slightly forward to help keep the airway open. The dentist will assess your teeth and jaw to see whether you are a suitable candidate.
Getting an appliance
The dentist examines your teeth, gums and jaw joints and reviews your sleep study results and physician’s recommendation. Healthy teeth and gums are needed to support the appliance. Impressions or scans are taken and your bite is recorded so the appliance can be custom-made.
When the appliance is ready, it is fitted and adjusted for comfort. The forward position may be increased gradually over time. Your physician may recommend a follow-up sleep study to check effectiveness. Keeping both your doctor and dentist informed helps coordinate care.
Ongoing care
Some people notice jaw soreness, tooth tenderness, excess saliva or bite changes, especially early on. Most effects are mild, but report them so adjustments can be made. Long-term use can sometimes shift the bite, so regular dental monitoring is important.
Clean the appliance daily as instructed and store it in its case. Bring it to dental checkups so fit and wear can be assessed. Continue to follow up with your physician about your sleep apnea. If symptoms return or worsen, contact both providers.

Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Yes. Sleep apnea should be diagnosed by a physician through a sleep study. This determines its severity and which treatments are appropriate.
For some patients, particularly with mild to moderate sleep apnea or CPAP intolerance, an appliance may be an alternative. Your physician and dentist will advise together.
Long-term use can cause bite changes in some people. Regular dental checkups help monitor this, and adjustments or exercises may be recommended.
They work similarly, but snoring alone may not mean sleep apnea. Sleep apnea requires medical diagnosis and follow-up to make sure treatment is effective.
There may be some initial jaw or tooth tenderness. The dentist adjusts the appliance gradually to improve comfort. Report persistent discomfort.
A custom oral appliance can reduce snoring for some adults once sleep apnea has been ruled out. Learn how Jarvis patients are assessed, fitted and followed up.
A custom night guard is shaped from your own teeth to help cushion grinding. Jarvis patients can be fitted at our Port Dover office and learn how to wear and maintain it.
