Obstructive sleep apnea happens when the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, interrupting breathing. Symptoms can include loud snoring, gasping, morning headaches and daytime fatigue. Untreated, it is associated with serious health risks. Diagnosis requires a sleep study arranged through a physician. For some people, a custom oral appliance made by a dentist forms part of the treatment plan.
Hagersville patients who have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, or who are concerned about it, can discuss oral appliance therapy at our Port Dover office. We coordinate with your physician rather than replacing medical assessment.

Diagnosis first
Loud, frequent snoring, pauses in breathing noticed by a partner, waking up choking, morning headaches, dry mouth on waking, daytime sleepiness and difficulty concentrating can suggest sleep apnea. High blood pressure and certain body types increase risk. If these sound familiar, talk to your family doctor, who can arrange appropriate testing.
A sleep study measures breathing, oxygen levels and other factors during sleep to confirm whether you have sleep apnea and how severe it is. This guides treatment. A dentist cannot diagnose sleep apnea, and an oral appliance should not be made for suspected sleep apnea without medical diagnosis and a physician’s involvement.
Treatment options
Continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, is often recommended, especially for moderate to severe sleep apnea. It delivers air through a mask to keep the airway open. Other approaches may include weight management, positional therapy or surgery. Your physician or sleep specialist will discuss which options suit your diagnosis and health.
An oral appliance, sometimes called a mandibular advancement device, holds the lower jaw slightly forward during sleep to help keep the airway open. It may be considered for mild to moderate sleep apnea, or for people who cannot tolerate CPAP. Suitability depends on your teeth, gums, jaw joints and the physician’s recommendation.
Getting an appliance
The dentist examines your teeth, gums, bite and jaw joints. Healthy teeth and gums are needed to hold the appliance. Records such as impressions or scans and a bite registration are taken. Your sleep study results and physician’s referral are reviewed. Ask how many visits are likely so you can plan your trips from Hagersville.
When the appliance is ready, the dentist fits it and shows you how to insert, remove and clean it. The jaw position is often adjusted gradually over several weeks to find a balance between effectiveness and comfort. Follow-up testing with your physician is usually needed to confirm the appliance is helping your breathing during sleep.
Long-term use
Some people experience jaw stiffness, tooth soreness, extra saliva or dry mouth at first. These often ease with time. Over the long term, oral appliances can cause changes in bite, so the dentist monitors this. Report persistent jaw pain, changes in how your teeth meet or damage to the appliance promptly.
Regular dental visits check the appliance, your teeth and jaw. Your physician monitors whether the sleep apnea is controlled. If symptoms like snoring or fatigue return, contact both your physician and dental office. Weight changes, new dental work or ageing can affect how well the appliance works over time.

Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. A dentist may notice signs and suggest you see your physician, but diagnosis requires a sleep study arranged through a medical provider. Dental treatment for sleep apnea should only follow medical diagnosis.
CPAP is often more effective, particularly for severe sleep apnea. Oral appliances can work well for some people with mild to moderate sleep apnea or those who cannot use CPAP. Your physician will advise based on your results.
Long-term use can cause gradual bite changes in some people. The dentist monitors this at regular visits and may recommend exercises or adjustments. Report any noticeable changes in how your teeth fit together.
They work similarly, but snoring can be a sign of sleep apnea. An appliance should not be used to treat snoring without checking for sleep apnea first, because it might mask a serious condition.
With care, many appliances last several years, though they may need repairs or adjustments. Bring it to regular dental visits so it can be checked for wear and fit. Replace it if it cracks or stops fitting securely.
A custom oral appliance may reduce snoring for some people, but sleep apnea must be ruled out first. Hagersville patients can learn how the process works.
A custom night guard is shaped to your teeth to cushion grinding forces. Hagersville patients can learn how it is made, fitted and cared for in Port Dover.
